شَكَوتُI complained الحُبَّlove حَرَّقَنيscorched me مَلاماwith reproach
Who will defend me, for loving you, against a censurer who, whenever
My excuse for you is blame if I complain of love’s burning, it chides me bitterly.
I complain of love, scorches me with reproach?
No, by your father, I have lost no patience, nor in loving you have I done wrong.
فَلاso no وَأَبيكِby your father ماnot ضَيَّعتُI squandered حِلماًsound judgment
وَلاand not قارَفتُI committed فيin حُبّيكِmy love for you ذاماanything blameworthy
No—by your father—I have not squandered good sense,
Blame for loving you is unjust, if I love the like of you, that I’m blamed.
Nor have I committed anything blameworthy in loving you.
You made lawful from my visitation unlawful, and made unlawful from my estrangement lawful.
أُلامُI am blamed عَلىfor هَواكِlove of you وَلَيسَand it is not عَدلاًjust
إِذاwhen أَحبَبتُI loved مِثلَكِone like you أَنthat أُلاماI am blamed
I am blamed for loving you; it is not just
Give me a look of one hoping for reward or fearing sins.
That, when I love one like you, I should be blamed.
You will see a burning liver, sleepless eyes, and a love-mad heart.
لَقَدindeed حَرَّمتِyou forbade مِنof وَصليunion with me حَلالاًwhat is lawful
وَقَدand indeed حَلَّلتِyou made lawful مِنof هَجريforsaking me حَراماwhat is forbidden
You have forbidden lawful union with me,
The abode of ‘Alwa drew near, then far - is there a rider to convey it greetings?
And made lawful the forbidden act of forsaking me.
And its specter renewed blame and reproach - we’re accustomed to nothing but trials.
أَعيديcast again فِيَّupon me نَظرَةَthe gaze of مُستَثيبٍone seeking reward
تَوَخّىsought الأَجرَreward أَوor كَرِهَshunned الأَثاماsin's punishment
Look upon me again with the gaze of one seeking recompense,
How many a night have I passed, watered by its eyes and hands with wine!
Who seeks reward or shrinks from sin's punishment.
We shared the night, kissing and embracing, and spent it hugging and adhering.
تَرىyou will see كَبِداًa liver مُحَرَّةًburning وَعَيناًand an eye
مُؤَرَّقَةًkept sleepless وَقَلباًand a heart مُستَهاماdistraught with love
You will see a burning liver and an eye
And it knew I neither failed a tryst nor slackened a covenant.
Kept sleepless, and a heart distraught with love.
If our camp has become Irāq, radiant, and its weather Syria,
تَناءَتgrew distant دارُthe dwelling of عَلوَةَAlwa بَعدَafter قُربِnearness
فَهَلso is there رَكبٌa band of riders يُبَلِّغُهاconveys to her السَلاماgreetings
Alwa's dwelling has grown distant after being near;
I have brought it only affection, and increased through it only love-longing.
Is there a band of riders to bear her my greetings?
Ja‘far’s caliphate is justice, safety, and clemency that goes on embracing all people.
وَجَدَّدَand renewed طَيفُهاher phantom لَوماًreproach وَعَتباًand rebuke
فَماfor not يَعتادُناvisits us إِلّاexcept لِماماoccasionally
And her phantom has renewed reproach and rebuke,
Wondrous in gifts – you see necks of wealth before him bowing in humbleness.
For it visits us only now and then.
When he grants pearls, you see a face whose beauty rivals the full moon.
وَرُبَّتَand many a لَيلَةٍnight قَدindeed بِتُّI spent the night أُسقىI am given drink
بِعَينَيهاby her two eyes وَكَفَّيهاand her two hands المُداماwine
And many a night I have spent being served
Wealthy he is, to vaunt or aspire! Sublime, to vaunt or aspire!
Wine by her eyes and her hands.
You flooded people with grace, nobility, true favor, and vengeance.
قَطَعناwe passed اللَيلَthe night لَثماًkissing وَاِعتِناقاًand embracing
وَأَفنَيناهُand we spent it all ضَمّاًclasping وَاِلتِزاماand holding close
We passed the night in kisses and embraces,
We count for you the cupbearer, prayer niche, pillars, and standing-place.
And spent it all in clasping and holding close.
Virtues you have weighed against glory, but they decreased not, and with them you have eternalized your name.
وَقَدand indeed عَلِمَتshe knew بِأَنّيthat I لَمnot أُضَيِّعI neglected
لَهاto her عَهداًa pledge وَلَمand not أُخفِرI violated ذِماماa covenant
And she knows that I have not broken
Had the caliphs contended with you one day over those who follow your creed and resolution,
A pledge to her, nor betrayed a covenant.
Would you not be more generous than them, more forceful of blade?
لَئِنeven if أَضحَتbecame مَحَلَّتُناour dwelling عِراقاًIraq
مُشَرِّقَةًeastward وَحِلَّتَهاand her dwelling شَآماSyria
Even if our dwelling has come to be in Iraq,
Had the imams assembled in one spot, you would have been for them imam.
Eastward, while her dwelling lies in Syria,
Opposing your command is disobedience to God, denying your right is to meet sins.
فَلَمyet not أُحدِثI developed لَهاfor her إِلّاexcept وِداداًaffection
وَلَمand not أَزدَدI grew بِهاfor her إِلّاexcept غَراماpassionate love
Yet I have developed for her nothing but affection,
No true Muslim he who did not give precedence to your friendship, even if he prayed and fasted.
And have only grown more ardently in love with her.
You were famed in every land’s horizons, lions of the white [sword] blades and sturdy heroes.
خِلافَةُthe caliphate of جَعفَرَJa'far عَدلٌjustice وَأَمنٌand security
وَحِلمٌand forbearance لَمnot يَزَلhas ceased يَسَعُembraces الأَناماmankind
Ja'far's caliphate is justice and security,
You took the lead, though advancement is hated, charging the deadly press.
And forbearance that has never ceased to embrace mankind.
God’s trustee! Abide for us unharmed, continuing in well-being and permanence!
غَريبُextraordinary in المَكرُماتِnoble deeds تَرىyou see لَدَيهِin his presence

رِقابَthe necks of المالِwealth تُهتَضَمُare crushed اِهتِضاماutterly
Wondrous in his noble deeds—you see before him
I see the beauties of Mutawwakiliyya have become perfected and achieved perfection.
The necks of wealth utterly crushed.
Palaces like gleaming stars, almost giving light to one who has lost his way in the dark.
إِذاwhen وَهَبَhe bestows البُدورَfull moons رَأَيتَyou see وَجهاًa face
تَخالُyou imagine بِحُسنِهِby its beauty البَدرَthe full moon التَماماin its fullness
When he bestows full moons, you see a face
A land like the cool of Washi’s wool - upon it the produce of gardens is spread and aromatic plants.
That in its beauty you take for the moon at its fullest.
When spring lightens, it puts on its brocade, valleys of al-Muzn, and the scented east wind.
غَنِيٌّfree of need أَنto يُفاخِرُvie in glory أَوor يُساميvie in eminence

جَليلٌtoo exalted أَنto يُفاخَرَbe rivaled in glory أَوor يُسامىbe rivaled in eminence
He has no need to vie in glory or eminence,
Marvels among the kinds of plants - selections of single blossoms and pairs.
Too exalted to be rivaled in glory or eminence.
Morning and evening it exchanges laughter with them - upon it the rain harmonizes in harmony.
غَمَرتَyou flooded الناسَmankind إِفضالاًwith beneficence وَفَضلاًand excellence
وَإِنعاماًand favors مُبِرّاًsurpassing وَاِنتِقاماand vengeance
You have flooded mankind with beneficence and excellence,
Had a cloud not announced it with its dripping, you would have been a cloud for it.
And with surpassing favors and vengeance.
نَعُدُّwe count لَكَfor you السِقايَةَthe giving of water وَالمُصَلّىand the prayer-place

We count as yours the giving of water and the place of prayer,
And the corners of the Kaaba and the Station:

فَلَم تَنقُص وَطُلتَ بِها شِماما
Noble honors you have weighed against Thabir,
And not fallen short; through them you have towered above Shimam.

بِمُعتَلِقيكَcatching up with you رَأياًin judgment وَاِعتِزاماand resolve
And the caliphs, were they ever to race against you,
Would not catch up with you in judgment or resolve.
أَلَستَare you not أَعَمَّهُمthe broadest of them جوداًin generosity وَأَزكاand the purest

Are you not the broadest of them in bounty, and the purest
Of them in stock, and the keenest of them in sword?

And were the imams gathered in one place,
With you among them, you would be their imam.

Whoever defies your command disobeys God,
And whoever denies your right will meet sin's punishment.

Allegiance to you, even if he prays and fasts.

The edges of gleaming swords and upright spears.

And you advanced, though advancing entails hardship,
Into engulfing perils that are stormed headlong.

O God's trustee, may you remain safe for us,
And may you long enjoy safety and lasting life.

Its beauties, and it has attained utter perfection.

They all but light the darkness for the night traveler.

Buttercup blossoms and lavender lie spread.
