We have unending sorrow to endure from Arwa

and Huzwa—how many a pang has Huzwa brought you!

Before Arwa, my tears were no easy prey

for the slightest departing companion or a deserted dwelling.

I swore to her that I was sound, except for what

a heart, sick for her and ailing, had clung to.

And I complained much of loving her; it is only

abundant complaint that marks love's torment.

I was, with Arwa, while youth was a lingering delight,

like a man drunk with passion's intoxication, or a drunken woman.

    وَقَد يَشهَدُ اللَهوَ الَّذي يَشهَدُ النَوى

    She claimed that a man of reason does not approach amusement;

yet one who witnesses parting may also witness amusement.

And I, though my composure troubles the lovely women,

am indeed besotted with union with them, enthralled.

Ask, you two, about the remnants of youth and their loss:

did the 'Anqa fly off with them, or did they outstrip Jalwa?

It is as though the nights' happenings were incited

to love what we reject and hate what we desire.

Whoever knows the days does not regard their ease

as bliss, nor count their changes an affliction.

When they unfold before their scout, they turn back,

hastening swiftly, to be folded away behind him.

Afflictions have indeed guided us; nor would

one who strays be guided without what they showed us.

When we ward off calamities through the holder of the two vizier-

ates, we pit them against a seasoned, formidable champion.

With a radiant man—accounts of nobility eclipse poetry,

accounts of his, forever handed down or recounted.

Noble deeds—wherever they are directed, you never cease

to see a wasted envier dwindling under their blessings.

He is granted sound judgment in an instant of intuition,

while some of them miss the right course despite having reflected.

He has an ambition: the highest-ranking star

is its dwelling or abode, to the exclusion of other places.

The two horizons have opened to reveal a drawn sword

whose onslaughts meet with neither growling nor howling.

Hidden from his enemies, he is beyond their reckoning

in his resolve, having confounded affairs as he has.

He gained mastery over strategy, then turned against them

with it, hurling intractable problems and never missing the vital mark.

When we mention him, we are stopped short and cannot speak

of any peer or equal to him among men.

Yes, Abu 'Isa has proofs of surpassing

excellence that was neither falsely assumed nor merely claimed.

We ponder between the auspicious full moon and him,

when he delights in doing good: which of the two shines brighter?

Time's turns, in blessings and misery, are not

more wounding to people than he, nor more healing.

We were watered from his two buckets; he took the place

of rain: when he waters with his first outpouring, he quenches thirst.

So one land received its share from his sky,

and another seeks a drink or waits for aid.

And you have a valley of bounty; it was not

on its farthest bank that we made our halt.

Whenever we accept a favor from him, you would think

that, being unequal to it, we had borne Radwa with it.

In truth, we and time are as when

the stronger's assault wrongs the weaker, enfeebled one.

Whenever events promise us a turn in our favor,

how likely that promise of theirs is to be put off!

If good fortune has been withheld from us, its like,

when time acts basely, is withheld from the likes of us.

When I say life's gloom has cleared, I am confronted by

remnants of what time has left and what it has destroyed.

Debts, in whose succession youth is forgotten,

and amid whose folds the dusky fawn is destroyed.

    Rashid remains suspended amid them,

in peril at the sale, approaching the abyss.

When a debt to a creditor falls due, there shrinks

before him strength that quails, or a liver aching with grief.

And he has sampled the flavor of reproachful bounty, but has not found

in it manna pleasing to the palate, nor quails.

I grieved for tender beauties that were close,

from terror of parting, to changing or withering.

And I said, as the intimate bonds between us

of love were about to be allotted to another or possessed,

“Perhaps Abu 'Isa will free, through his bounty,

the necks of loved ones already close to perishing.”

It is no overreaching to direct my desire to those fit for it,

and to seek bounty from the giver of bounty.

Dinars repaid with rhymes, as though

their apportioner had divided them justly or equally.

    وَإِمّا أَقَمنا وَطَّتِ الرَحلَ وَالمَأوى

    When we depart, they make our journey's provisions easy to obtain;

and when we stay, they make home and shelter comfortable.

And this is enough to show you the merit of dinars:

when included in provisions, they rank second to piety.
