وَصَلناwe have come إِلىto التَوديعِfarewell غَيرَnot مُوَدَّعِforsaken
سَنَحفَظُwe shall preserve عَهداًa pledge مِنكَfrom you غَيرَnot مُضَيَّعِlost
We have come to farewell, yet you are not forsaken.
We have reached the farewell undeserving of farewells
We shall preserve your pledge, never letting it be lost.
We will keep a pact with you that will not go to waste
أَماindeed وَالَّذيby Him who يُبقيكَpreserves you لِلحَمدِfor praise وَالنَدىand generosity
لَيَنتَظِمَنَّwill surely pierce الشَوقُlonging مابَينَwhat lies between أَضلُعيmy ribs
Indeed, by Him who preserves you for praise and generosity,
By the One who keeps you for glory and dew
longing will surely pierce what lies between my ribs;
Yearning will surely take hold amid my ribs
وَتَأخُذُand you will exact مِنfrom عَينيmy eye بِحَقِّthe rightful due of دُموعِهاits tears
وَيَرتاعُand will quake قَلبٌa heart لَمnot (past) يَكُنbe بِمُرَوَّعِfrightened
and you will exact from my eye its due of tears,
And it will take tears from my eyes by their right
and a heart never frightened before will quake.
A heart will tremble that was not previously trembling
وَمِنand among أَعجَبِthe strangest of الأَشياءِthings أَنَّthat قُلوبَناour hearts
صِحاحٌwhole لِخَوفِfrom fear of البَينِparting لَمnot (past) تَتَقَطَّعِbe torn apart
And among the strangest things is that our hearts
Of the most wondrous things is that our hearts
remain whole, not torn apart by fear of parting.
Are composed, fearing separation, unfragmented
وَلَوand if أَنَّthat غَربَthe flow of الدَمعِtears كانَwere مُشاكِلاًequal
لِغَربِto the force of الأَسىgrief لَاِرفَضَّit would gush forth مِنfrom كُلِّevery مَدمَعِtear duct
And if the flow of tears were equal
And if the setting of tears matched
to the force of grief, it would gush from every tear duct.
The setting of sorrow, it would have refused every tear duct
وَلَكِنbut جَرىflowed مِنهُof it قَليلٌa little مُصَرَّدٌdoled out sparingly
وَلَمand not (past) يَكُbe تَصريدُthe scanting of الدُموعِtears بِمُقنِعِsufficient
But only a little flowed, doled out sparingly,
But little that was filtered came from it
and a scant measure of tears was not enough.
The flowing of tears was not convincing
فَرَوّاكَso may it drench you صَوبُthe downpour of الحَمدِpraise فيin كُلِّevery مَوطِنٍabode
وَجادَكَand may it shower you غَيثُthe rain of الدَهرِtime فيin كُلِّevery مَربَعِspring pasture
So may the downpour of praise drench you in every abode,
Good fortune looked upon you in every place
and may time's rain shower you in every spring pasture.
The rain of time was generous to you in every plot
وَلازِلتَand may you ever remain بِالصُنعِby favor الجَميلِgracious مُشَيَّعاًescorted
كَماjust as أَنَّنيthat I بِالصَبرِby patience غَيرُnot مُشَيَّعِescorted
And may you ever be escorted by gracious favor,
You still proceed with kindness
just as I am not escorted by patience.
As I proceed with patience, undeserving
