and checked my far-reaching hand so it gained nothing,

I have indeed praised its vicissitudes, for I came to know,
through their ill turns, bands of those against me and for me.

وَلا أَرَدتُ بِكُم في الناسِ مِن بَدَلِ
O sons of al-Mudabbir, I have not found your efforts slow,
nor have I wished for anyone among people to take your place.

Your days are my own days, which straightened
my bent course; your good fortune is my share of fortune.

Through your bounty I have dwelt amid flourishing green growth,
and through your influence I have journeyed in a drenching downpour.

People turned cold toward those they once knew,
yet Abu Ishaq's disposition remains unchanged.

If God raises his rank, he shows us greater kindness
in his regard, as though nothing had changed.

We return, through you, to the path you first took,
so we roam amid your virtues of old.

وَأَطلُبُ النائِلَ الأَقصى إِلى الجَبَلِ
Shall I leave the level plain of your bounty that I follow,
and seek far-off largesse up on the mountain?

Yes, I have found less to praise in the free-ranging one's
pasture than in that of the one confined by a tether.
أَقصِرhow deficient بِرَأيِيَmy judgment إِنif شَرَّقتُI go east عَنكَaway from you غَداًtomorrow

How poor my judgment, if tomorrow I go east away from you,
and a night away from you passes for me without seeming long!

Even if I possessed a resolve that kept pulling me
onward, the bounty of your two palms would be among my hobbles.

I would seek nothing beyond your bounty, were it not for what surrounds it
in Surr Man Ra'a: ignorance and miserliness.

يَكونُ يَأسِيَ أَعلى فيهِ مِن أَمَلي
How, then, can I willingly look toward a land
where my despair rises higher than my hope?

The following rain came, and its first drops soaked the earth,
yet my burning thirst drew no moisture from it.

I did ask, yet was given no desirable gift,
though it was my right to be given without even asking.

إِعجَب لِأَخطاءِ رامٍ مِن بَني ثُعَلِ
I shoot with my expectation, yet with it achieve nothing but misses.
Marvel at the misses of an archer from Banu Thu'al!

I set out, since throughout my long stay there
I have come up empty; perhaps I shall gain on departing.

And sometimes raiders are denied their spoils
on a raid, then win spoils on the return journey.

Go east and west: the experienced know that what
you seek lies in the trot of swift-trotting she-camels.

And do not speak of diverse peoples or vast distances:
for the earth is of one soil, and people are of one man.
