    بِها وَجدُها مِن غادَةٍ وَوَلوعُها

    The soul's wishes lie in Asma', if only it could attain them;

for her, a graceful maiden, it feels longing and infatuation.

Her rejection has indeed alarmed me; yet she only

turns away because the gray in my cheek-whiskers frightens her.

I bore my love for her on the day at al-Liwa's bend

upon a liver already weakened by its cracks.

And I was a devotee of beautiful women; ceaselessly

their devotee decries the fidelity of beautiful women.

And many a beauty has shown no kindness; often

I have yearned for a beauty whose conduct was bad.

    وَلِلنَفسِ تَعصيني هَوىً وَأُطيعُها

    I marveled at her: she shows aversion, yet I love her;

and at my soul: in passion it defies me, yet I obey it.

She complains of sore feet while night is wrapped in gloom—

a camel of Ghurayri lineage, her open pasture barren.

And I am no frequent visitor of kings through footsore travel

if her girths and straps have not loosened.

She heads for the white palaces in the land of Babylon,

where its Ghard and Badi' meet.

When the overlooking tower looms, they cast at it

glances from sunken eyes, their saddle-cloths now threadbare.

Its gleam lights for them the course of night travel

when a watch of night grows black with darkness.

She visits the Commander of the Faithful, though before him lie

the steppes of the land, broad and vast.

Whenever we came down to a town, its people repeated

tales of the good his bounty did, proclaiming them abroad.

for they knew its impregnable stronghold could not be assailed.

And when he tended his subjects' flock, it was kept

from drought by the land's green, fertile stretches.

I knew with certainty, since Ja'far placed his trust

in God concerning it, that he would not neglect it.

Doubt cleared from our eyes through a caliphate

whose dawn banished injustice and darkness from us.

It is the sun: its light revealed the splendor of truth,

and its rising shone in the hearts' secret depths.

her great buildings vanished from her midst and her settlements lay deserted.

It pained me that her dwellings stood empty,

her haunts desolate, her united people scattered.

And they came to share death's cup, after once being

drinking bands, their drinkers sharing wine at ease.

Whenever they parted after one battle, they were gathered

for another by blood whose spilling was never left unavenged.

The delicate young woman condemns her husband's character

if he spends the night beside her without taking vengeance.

A fervor of pre-Islamic strife, and a pride

like Kulayb's, which men could not subdue.

And warriors of battle, their breasts seething

with rancor until their armor grows tight.

They slaughter, for a blood-feud, the lives most precious

to them, with hands that scarcely obey them.

When they fight one day and their blood pours out,

they remember kinship, and their tears pour out.

    Interlacing spears sever among them

interlacing bonds of kinship, whose severance is condemned.

Were it not for the Commander of the Faithful and his bounty,

shirt-fronts would again have been stained with blood,

and Taghlib's rootstock would have been uprooted,

through which her boughs and branches were preserved.

You lifted Taghlib, daughter of Wa'il, by both arms,

when she had despaired of her fallen ever rising.

So, God's trustee, you became the protector of her life,

and your retainer Fath was her intercessor that day.

By my life, you indeed honored him with a kindness

to them, and a blessing he kept spreading among them.

He won them over after they had been scattered

by the resentments of tempers slow to relent.

    وَأَقصَرَ غاليها وَدانى شُسوعُها

    Her errant one saw the clear path and found guidance;

her extremist desisted, and her distant one drew near.

He enforced a judgment among them, and they ceased hostilities,

her lowly and high-ranking alike content with it.

So the brown shafts of spears were planted, and sheathed were

the slender sword-blades, the neglected and the fine alike.

Thus hearts whose pounding had been great grew calm,

and eyes whose slumber had been scant fell asleep.

They came to you, their reason returned to them,

their desisting having distanced them from what you hated.

They repeat and offer praise as though it were

ribbons of upland meadow, lavishly watered by its spring.

They turn away in shame from meeting you face to face:

their rebels committed the fault, and their obedient ones were blamed.

They have no excuse, save that their prudent one's forbearance

turned to folly amid evil wrought by their reckless one.

And many an anxious mother, fearing death for her son

at the first battle in which its hosts might meet—

you tethered her skittish heart through peace among the people,

so her breast grew calm and her ribs were at rest.

May you endure! How many lives you spared through pardon, showing kindness

to Taghlib, until her lame could move steadily on.
