دَواعيpromptings الحينِdoom سُقنَthey drove إِلىto نَجاحِNajah
رُكوبَembarking on البَغيِoppression لِلأَجَلِtoward the appointed death المُتاحِallotted
The promptings of doom led Najah
The motives of the present have led to success
To pursue oppression toward his allotted death.
By riding injustice for the time being
وَلَوand had نُصحاًsincere counsel أَرادَhe intended لَكانَwould have been فيهِin it
Najah
And had he intended sincere counsel, in that
Even if he had intended advice, in it
Ubayd Allah would have outstripped Najah.
Would have preceded the slaves of God in success
فَحاقَso befell بِرَأسِهِupon his head ماwhat كانَhe had been يَنويintending
وَحَلَّand descended بِأَهلِهِupon his household سوءُmisfortune الصَباحِthe morning
So what he had intended fell upon his own head,
So there befell his head what he intended
And the morning's calamity befell his household.
And his family was afflicted at dawn
مُدِلٌّboastful بِالسِعايَةِof malicious denunciation وَالتَبَدّيand open display
بِهاfor it قَتَلَkilled الإِمامَthe imam (contextually read as subject) بِلاwithout جُناحِblame
Boastful of slander and of openly displaying it,
With plotting and pretense he lowered himself
For this, the imam killed him without blame.
By it he killed the Imam without right
وَأَكذَبُand a greater liar مِنthan مُسَيلَمَةَMusaylimah بنِson of صَعبٍSa'b
وَأَفضَحُand more shameful فيamong العَشيرَةِthe clan مِنthan سَجاحِSajah
And a greater liar than Musaylimah son of Sa'b,
More lying than Musaylimah ibn Thumamah
And more shameful among the clan than Sajah.
And more scandalous among the clan than Sajaah
بَدَتappeared لِخَليفَةِto the caliph of الرَحمَنِthe All-Merciful مِنهُfrom him
مَزايِنُadornments خائِنٍa traitor نَطِفٍtainted وَقاحِshameless
The caliph of the All-Merciful saw in him
There appeared to the Caliph of the Merciful from him
The trappings of a tainted, shameless traitor.
The attributes of a traitor, villain and shameless
فَكانَso he was يُريدُseeking نُصحاًsincere counsel وَهوَwhile he was مُضبٍsecretly harboring
عَلىupon غِشٍّdeceit كَأَطرافِlike the points of الرِماحِspears
So he sought to offer sincere counsel, while secretly harboring
So he wanted advice while being resentful
Deceit like the points of spears.
Of deceit, like spearheads
فَأُبسِلَso he was doomed بِالَّذيfor what كَسِبَتhad earned يَداهُhis two hands
وَعَمَّand encompassed الناسَthe people ذَلِكَthat بِالصَلاحِwith well-being
So he was given over to doom for what his hands had earned,
So he met what his hands had earned
And that brought well-being to all the people.
And people were generally benefited by that
فَلاso may not عَدِمَlack الإِمامُthe imam صَوابَsoundness of رَأيٍjudgment
نَفىdrove away الجَزباءِthe mangy she-camel (probable textual correction) عَنfrom عَطَنِthe camels' watering-place الصِحاحِthe healthy camels
May the imam never lack the sound judgment
Thus the Imam did not lack sound judgment
That drove the mangy she-camel from the healthy camels' watering-place.
Which dismissed the worthless from the authentic
وَأَبقاهُand may He preserve him الإِلَهُGod بَقاءَthe lifespan of نوحٍNoah
لِتَشيِيدِto build up المَكارِمِnoble virtues وَالسَماحِand generosity
And may God keep him alive as long as Noah,
And God maintained him with the survival of Nuh
To build up noble virtues and generosity.
To build virtues and tolerance
