    نُبُوُّ الجُنوبِ وَإِقضاضُها

    The languor of eyelids and the sickness they cause;

    the restlessness of sides and their aching.

    And how much sleeplessness in love has been stirred

    by beauties’ shunning and their turning away!

    And a fair-skinned woman whose desertion brings despair,

    yet whose flashes kindle hope of union.

    She appeared, and by her glance was laid low

    a heart-sick man, his ribs shattered.

    O Ishaq, noble man, may your ransom be

    the lineages of Tayy and its honor.

    And may you be congratulated on an honor brought

    to you by one with a generous, overflowing hand.

    Robes of a radiant man, bestowed especially on you

    by one whose robes are fine and ample.

    يُعاضُ الرَغائِبَ مُعتاضُها

    They signify a place of favor with him;

    whoever gains it is rewarded with coveted gifts.

    So may you never cease aiming for blessings

    whose targets outstrip your arrows.
