So he survived an old worn cloak.
أَشلىit unleashed عَلىagainst مَنويلَManuel أَطرافَthe points of القَناthe spears
فَنَجاso he escaped عَتيقَthe freedman of عَتيقَةٍa highbred mare جَرداءِsleek
It unleashed the spearpoints against Manuel,
Had he extended them, they would have
and he escaped, the freedman of a sleek, highbred mare.
Issued from him while still unquenched.
وَلَوَand had انَّهُhe أَبطاlingered لَهُنَّfor them هُنَيهَةًa little while
لَصَدَرنَthey would have come away عَنهُfrom him وَهُنَّwhile they were غَيرُnot ظِماءِthirsty
And had he lingered for them a little while,
So if fate leaves him until his time,
they would have come away from him no longer thirsty.
You have distributed his troops unto death.
فَلَئِنso even if تَبَقّاهُspared him القَضاءُfate لِوَقتِهِuntil his appointed time
فَلَقَدthen indeed عَمَمتَyou enveloped all جُنودَهُhis troops بِفَناءِin annihilation
Though fate has spared him until his appointed time,
You burdened him with his partisans and left him
you have enveloped his troops in annihilation.
To death awaiting the morn of night.
أَثكَلتَهُyou bereaved him of أَشياعَهُhis followers وَتَرَكتَهُand you left him
لِلمَوتِfor death مُرتَقِباًawaiting صَباحَmorning مَساءِevening
You bereaved him of his followers and left him
Even if he swallowed iron he would melt it
awaiting death morning and evening,
With the sparks of his hot panting breath.
حَتّىso that even لَوِif اِرتَشَفَhe sipped الحَديدَiron أَذابَهُhe would melt it
بِالوَقدِwith the burning heat مِنfrom أَنفاسِهِhis breaths الصُعَداءِdeeply sighing
so that even if he sipped iron, he would melt it
with the burning heat of his long, sighing breaths.
