وَنَأيِي بِالمَشارِقِ وَاِغتِرابي
Spare me your reproach for my turning away and avoidance,
My blame lies in estrangement and avoidance,
and my remoteness in eastern lands and my exile.
And in journeys to far lands in solitude.

For the urgings of longing have begun to call
For yearning's motives call me
toward settlements at Wasit or Kinab.
To meet by lawful means or stealthily.

Wishes are to be fulfilled; then my resolve is carried through
Excuses to be made, then purpose fixed
toward you, between the calls 'Hal!' and 'Hab!'
To reach you, between hesitation and resolve.

Though I leave behind half my soul,
Though leaving half myself behind
and my solace whether far away or near:
I forget in distance, and in nearness remember.

a brother to whom I give my innermost affection,
A brother I would make him, sharing intimacy,
and for whom I pray for the clouds’ pearls.
And begging for him raindrops from clouds.

If I ask him for aid, he is an arm of the sea;
If I summon him he is a sea-bay,
or rouse him to action, he is a son of the thicket.
Or if I rouse him, a brook in the hills.

When I enter his abode I find him
with a welcoming home and verdant surroundings,
A boon companion, green of side.

Rare in fortune, generous in giving.

Wilderness to the ears, not to be companied
by repeated reproach and rebuke.
With repetition of blame and reproach.

He deems a friend’s reproach directed at him an offense,
He sees refusal of a friend as a fault
and counts rebuke among insults.
And takes reproach for abuse.

Nor has he been prodded for slowness in meeting needs,
He was not pushed away from wants by slowness
as a sluggish camel among the mounts is prodded.
As camels shoved away at the mounting-place.

Abu Bishr, you are my brother and my beloved,
Abu Bishr, you are my brother and beloved,
and the one my testing and choosing have approved.
He who accepts my trial and choosing.

Let a base-born man of the house of Zayd be your ransom,
Your ransom is a nurtured one of Zayd's clan,
a giver of favors to one in the bloom of youth.

Who thinks little of being ill spoken of
spoken of, if in the morning he is well dressed.
If finely dressed, well praised tomorrow.

His penis is abased while needs are fulfilled,
Base in wealth and wants fulfilled,
and his chest is smeared with dust.
Wrongs forgiven and covered with dust.

Licensed over his testicles a general warrant,
open to all, even if he retreats deep behind the veil.
However deep he probes into secrets.
