سَبَقَcame before الوَقتَthe time ضِراراًout of spite وَعَجِلand hastened
She said, 'Gray hair has appeared.' I said, 'Yes.'
It came before its time, spitefully and in haste.
وَمَعَand with الشَيبِgray hair عَلىdespite عِلّاتِهِits drawbacks
مُهلَةٌa respite لِلَّهوِfor pleasure حيناًfor a while وَالغَزَلand courtship
And with gray hair, despite its drawbacks,
there is still some time for pleasure and courtship.
خَيَّلَتshe made it seem أَنَّthat التَصابيyouthful dalliance خَرَقٌfolly
بَعدَafter خَمسينَfifty وَمَنand whoever يَسمَعhears يَخَلsupposes so
She made it seem that youthful dalliance is folly
after fifty—and whoever hears thinks so.
أَتُرىI wonder حُبّيmy love لِسُعدىfor Su'da قاتِليmy killer
وَإِذاand when ماemphatic particle أَفرَطَexceeds bounds الحُبُّlove قَتَلkills
I wonder: will my love for Su'da kill me?
And when love exceeds its bounds, it kills.
خَطَرَتflitted فيin النَومِsleep مِنهاfrom her خَطرَةٌa fleeting vision
خَطرَةَa flash البَرقِlightning بَداappeared ثُمَّthen اضمَحَلvanished
A fleeting vision of her passed through my sleep,
like a flash of lightning that appeared, then vanished.
أَيُّwhat a زَورٍvisitor لَكِof yours لَوif قَصداًdeliberately سَرىtraveled by night
وَمُلِمٍّand a passing visitor مِنكِfrom you لَوif حَقّاًtruly فَعَلdid so
What a visitor of yours, had it come deliberately by night,
and what a caller from you, had it truly done so!

فَإِذاthen when فارَقَهاleaves it النَومُsleep بَطَلvanishes
It appears while slumber is in my eye,
and when sleep leaves it, the vision vanishes.
قَمَرٌa moon أَتبَعتُهُI followed it مِنout of كَلَفٍardent love
نَظَرَthe gaze الصَبِّof the lovesick one بِهِfor it حَتّىuntil أَفَلit set
A moon that, out of ardent love, I followed
with the gaze of one lovesick for it, until it set.
أَوجَلَتنيmade me fearful بَعدَafter أَمنٍsecurity غِرَّتيmy heedlessness
وَاِغتِرارُand being lulled by الأَمنِsafety يَستَدعيinvites الوَجَلfear
My heedlessness made me fearful after I had felt secure;
and being lulled by safety invites fear.
لَمnot أُوَهَّمI was led to imagine نِعمَتيmy good fortune تَغدُرُbetrays بيme
غَدرَةًa betrayal الظِلُّthe shade سَجاlay still ثُمَّthen اِنتَقَلmoved away
I was never led to think my good fortune would betray me
with the treachery of shade that lay still, then moved away.
زَمَنٌan age تَلعَبُtoy بيwith me أَحداثُهُits misfortunes
لَعِبَlike the play النَكباءِof the crosswind بِالرُمحِwith the spear الخَطِلlong and swaying
An age whose misfortunes toy with me,
as a crosswind toys with a long, swaying spear.
وَأَرىand I regard العُدمَpoverty فَلاso do not تَحفِلpay heed بِهِto it
عُقَبَةًa spell تُقضىto be completed وَكَلماًand a wound يَندَمِلheals
And I regard poverty—so pay it no heed—
as a spell that runs its course, and a wound that heals.
أَكبَرَتfound it intolerable نَفسيmy soul وَكَرهاًand with loathing أَكبَرَتfound it intolerable
أَنto تَلَقّىreceive النَيلَbounty مِنfrom كَفِّthe palm of الأَشَلthe palsied man
My soul found it intolerable—and with loathing found it so—
to receive bounty from a palsied man's palm.
وَمِنَand among المَعروفِkindness مُرٌّbitter مَقِرٌّintensely bitter
يَلفِظُspits out الطاعِمُthe eater مِنهُof it ماwhat أَكَلhe ate
And some kindness is bitter, intensely bitter:
the eater spits out what he has eaten of it.
