She reproached me, though not for shedding tears,
She did not blame me for shedding tears,
but because the flood of tears did not endure.
But blamed that my tears did not last long.

She felt pain when she saw my pain
from parting's calamity, which made me forget pain's burning anguish.
From the agony of separation—human nature is to feel pain.

She concealed tears that she did not reveal,
She went on shedding unseen tears
while I revealed tears that I did not conceal.
While I went on shedding unconcealed tears.

Through parting, a rift is mended and made whole,
Separation causes a rift that can be mended
while folly splits a union that will not heal.
While absence causes cracks that cannot be mended.

O sanctuary of passion, your affliction remains
haunts of decay and streaming tears!
A sanctuary of decrepitude and continual tears.

What harm would have befallen your people
justice in the decree, as it had been unjust in judgment?
Had the rule of justice returned as it had been perverted?

How many traces of passion and love remain in the heart
unworn by the fury of days and age!
Time and days failed to erase!

With the King of Kings from Jusham!

for you have taken your place upon heads and summits.
You have adorned the highlands and summits.

Indeed the Emir Ibn Tawq—majestic is his nobility.
with which God has clothed you among Arabs and non-Arabs.
God has made him unique among Arabs and non-Arabs.

A sword, leader of guidance—when erected
without setting upright those who had not stood.
It establishes those who were not standing.

How many a mighty man has folded his flank upon humiliation,
How many a dear soul was stingy out of spite
whose instep he made slip from its foothold.
Yet his heel was dragged in spite of him.

Ask the wicked about their days:
what the consequences of transgression did to them.
What did the consequences of crime do to them

When, in ignorance, they rebelled and transgressed, he marshaled against them
When they transgressed and wronged in crass ignorance?
a war that made them choke on cold, icy water.
You decreed on them a war to choke them with icy death.

You were forebearing with peace until their ignorant thought
that you had turned to play, and closed your eyes through deafness.
That you had become heedless and your resolve had weakened.

But when dissension—pure and simple—disheveled them,
you set their disheveled locks in order with the sword.
You struck them with a sword to trim their dishevelment.

You unsheathed against them a keen, hard-tempered sword
You brandished against them a sharp, slicing blade
and a resolve like the edge of a sharp, slicing blade.
And a resolute determination like that of the biting, piercing sword.

The entrances to earth's passes were barred against them,
The faces of the wicked on earth were shut before them
until they seemed bewildered behind a barricade.
As if they were in the bewilderment of oblivion.

They spent the night kindling war's fire among themselves,
They passed the night kindling the fire of war among themselves
and dawn found them between Death's claw and maw.
And woke up between victory for havoc and a mouth.

You cured their illness when you met them
with the sickness of a bloody battle that cures sickness.
With the malady of a decisive battle that heals illness.

From the stormcloud of appointed deaths you sent above them
You sent against them from the confines of fate
birds in flocks, not counted among the vultures.
Birds in flocks not attributed to shooting.

You lowered death's bucket into their souls,
You made them drink from the bucket of death
and submerged it to the rope-bindings and leather straps.
And drowned them into ruin and rot.

You crushed them when you engaged them
with a shoulder of yours that emerged unbroken.
With your powerful shoulders that cannot be crushed.

You left them wounded, or forcibly taken
You left them—wounded, vanquished,
captive, or cast down as meat upon a butcher's board.
Moaning, felled, flesh upon flesh.

Captives, wounded, and slain in their dwellings,
Captives, injured, and dead in their homes—
as though they had donned shirts of leather.
As if wearing a shirt of blood.

You bequeathed them remorse after what they had done,
You made them inherit regret for the ignorance of their deeds
if you had left in them any place for remorse.
If you left in them a place for regret.

Your horses remained fasting on the day of terror,
On the day of the raid, your steeds fasted
but your sword did not fast on the day of terror.
But on the day of the raid, your sword did not fast.

The clouds of death poured over their heads
The clouds of death poured over their pillars
a downpour of death, its rain and steady showers close upon them.
In a downpour of death—intimate, bloody.

Battles branded the nose of dissension, though
Events that set out to cut off the nose of dissension
dissension had long lived unbranded.
Though dissension had lived a time without being cut off.

It was as though its nose-bridge had been proudly high,
As if in its burrows there was a smell
then it became nose-cropped, after its length and loftiness.
That returned tailless after time and smelling.

From your breeze, O Abu Kulthum, gushed forth
springs of generosity amid hardship and distress.
The springs of generosity in hardship and famine.

towering in height, pillars, and supports.
Rising high, solidly constructed.

Though devoid of the dishonor of poverty.
