Praise be to God for what I see
Praise be to God for what I see
of God's decree as it runs its course.
Of the decree of God that flows
ماnot كانَwas ذاthis العالَمُthe world مِنof عالَميmy world
يَوماًa day وَلاnor ذاthis الدَهرُthe age مِنof دَهريmy age
This world was never my world,
Never was this world one of my two worlds
not for a day, nor this age my age.
Nor was this life ever one of my two lives
يَعتَرَضُstands in the way الحِرمانُdeprivation فيin مَطلَبيmy pursuit
وَيَحكُمُand judges الخَزّارُal-Khazzār فيon شِعريmy poetry
Deprivation stands in the way of my pursuit,
Deprivation disputes my quest
and al-Khazzār judges my poetry.
While the critic passes judgement on my poetry
