Pass by Aleppo, with its gardens,
I pass by Aleppo of gardens
its pleasant vistas and life's varied delights.
And plain scenery and pleasant living
وَقُلand say لِدُحمانَto Duhman إِنif واجَهتَyou encounter جَمَّتَهُhis thick locks
تَقُلyou will speak لِمُضطَرِبِto one unstable in الأَخلاقِcharacter مَأفونِwitless
And tell Duhman, if you come upon his mop of hair—
And say to Duhman if you meet his assembly
you will be addressing a witless man of erratic character:
Say to the ill-natured outcast
أَمسَكتَyou withheld نَيلَكَyour bounty إِمساكَthe withholding of القُمُدِّthe miserly boor وَلَوand even if
أَعطَيتَyou gave لَمnot تُعطِyou give غَيرَother than القُلِّa pittance وَالدونِand the inferior
You withheld your bounty like a miserly boor; even if
You held back your Nile like a skinflint though
you gave, you would give only a pittance and inferior things.
If you had given you’d have given only the inferior and base
ماكانَthere was no فيamong عُقَلاءِthe sane الناسِpeople ليfor me أَمَلٌhope
فَكَيفَso how أَمَّلتُdid I hope for خَيراًgood فيamong المَجانينِthe mad
I had no hope in the sane among people;
I had no hope in the intelligent people
so how did I hope for good among madmen?
So how did I hope for good in the insane

Do not boast: your father was not descended from
Do not boast, for your father was not attributed
Bahram Gur, nor from Bahram Chubin.
To the unjust Bahram or the bright Bahram

Neither al-Nawshajan nor Nawbakht ever came near him,
Neither Anushirwan nor Nushirwan went around it
nor did he arise radiant from Kisra and Sirin.
Nor got news from Chosroes or Serene

When the hills of the Persians rose high in honor,
When the plateaus of Persia rose in nobility
your elders went about sway-backed in loincloths,
Your elders crouched low in hiding

bent over the barband harness, delighted by
Leaning on their axes, excited
the lilt of the zimirta chant and the sounds of mills.
By the twitter of birds and sounds of windmills
أَدّىpaid خَراجِيَmy land-tax لَمّاwhen أَنthat بَخِلتَyou were stingy بِهِwith it
حَياrain نَدىًbounty مَيِّتٍa dead man فيin موشَMush مَدفونِburied
My land-tax, when you begrudged it, was paid
I paid my tribute when you were miserly with it
by the rain of bounty from a dead man buried in Mush.
Bringing to life the call of one dead and buried
بَقِيَّةٌa remnant مِنof عَطاءِthe bounty البَحرِthe sea رَغَّبَنيhe inclined me

A remnant of the sea's bounty—he drew me
A remainder of the sea's gift made me covet it
with it away from green algae and mud.
Over the green moss and the mud
فَإِنso if تَناسَيتُI feign forgetting نُعماهُhis favors الَّتيwhich قَدُمَتwere long past
فَكُنتُthen may I be مِثلَكَlike you فيin الدُنياworldly life وَفيand in الدينِfaith
So if I pretend to forget his favors of old,
If I forget the favors he brought
then may I be like you in worldly life and in faith.
I'd be like you in life and religion
