ياّبنَO son of حُمَيدٍHumayd عِشlive لَناfor us سالِماًsafe and sound
ياّبنَ حُمَيدٍ عِش لَنا سالِماً
ماas long as اختَلَفَalternated النَوروزُNowruz وَالمِهرَجانand Mihrajan
ما اختَلَفَ النَوروزُ وَالمِهرَجان
O son of Humayd, live safe and sound for us,
O son of Humaid, live for us in peace
As long as Nowruz and Mihrajan alternate.
Nowruz and Mihrajân are still the same
وَاستَأنِفِand begin again العُمرَlife جَديداًanew فَقَدfor indeed
وَاستَأنِفِ العُمرَ جَديداً فَقَد
وَلّىpassed away زَمانٌa time وَأَتاناand came to us زَمانa time
وَلّى زَمانٌ وَأَتانا زَمان
And begin life anew, for indeed
Resume life anew, for time has passed
A time has passed, and another has come to us.
One era ended, another came
أَماdo you not تَرىsee الأَرضَthe earth وَأَثوابُهاand its garments
أَما تَرى الأَرضَ وَأَثوابُها
شَقائِقُanemones النُعمانِof al-Nu‘man (flower name) وَالأُقحُوانand daisies
شَقائِقُ النُعمانِ وَالأُقحُوان
Do you not see the earth, whose garments are
Do you not see the earth and her attire
Anemones and daisies?
Anemones and poppies so vibrant
وَهَذِهِand these الأَيّامُdays قَدindeed أُبدِلَتhave been transformed
وَهَذِهِ الأَيّامُ قَد أُبدِلَت
فَهيَso they are ظِرافٌcharming ناضِراتٌfresh حِسانbeautiful
فَهيَ ظِرافٌ ناضِراتٌ حِسان
And these days have indeed been transformed;
These days have been transformed
So they are charming, fresh, and fair.
To gentle, blossoming, radiant ones
فَصَدتَyou let blood فيat النَوروزِNowruz عِرقاًa vein وَقَدand indeed
فَصَدتَ في النَوروزِ عِرقاً وَقَد
تُخِيِّرَwas carefully chosen الوَقتُthe time وَطابَand was favorable الأَوانthe moment
تُخِيِّرَ الوَقتُ وَطابَ الأَوان
You opened a vein at Nowruz, and indeed
You perspired on Nowruz, the time
The time was well chosen, and the moment was right.
Has ripened, and the moment is right
فَاِستَعمِلِso drink الصَهباءَthe tawny wine فيat مَجلِسٍa gathering
فَاِستَعمِلِ الصَهباءَ في مَجلِسٍ
تَستَعمِلُplay الأَوتارَthe strings فيهِin it القِيانthe singing girls
تَستَعمِلُ الأَوتارَ فيهِ القِيان
So drink the tawny wine at a gathering
So gather with friends joyfully
Where singing girls play the strings.
As musicians pluck strings in delight
