غَيثَrain الضَريكِthe destitute وَطارِدَand banisher of الإِملاقِpoverty
O son of al-Mudabbir, O Abu Ishaq,
O son of the wise planner, O Abu Ishaq
Rain for the destitute and banisher of poverty!
Relief for the needy, repeller of disgrace
عِشlive لِلمُروأَةِfor noble character وَالفُتُوَّةِand chivalry وَالعُلاand eminence

Live for honor, chivalry, and eminence,
Live for chivalry, excellence and glory
And all that is fine in manners and morals.
Morals superb and character upright
أَمّاas for مَسامِعُناour ears الظِماءُthirsty فَإِنَّهاso indeed they
تَرَوىare quenched بِماءِwith the water of كَلامِكَyour speech الرَقراقِshimmering
As for our thirsty ears, they
Our thirsty ears get nourished
Are quenched by the shimmering water of your speech.
By the soft sound of your speech
وَإِذاand when النَوائِبُcalamities أَظلَمَتgrew dark أَحداثُهاtheir events

And when the events of calamity grow dark,
When calamities darken their events
They don the fairest radiance through your face.
Your face dawns with the finest glow

And when your clouds flash lightning, they pay no heed
When your clouds thunder, you don't care
To misfortune with its thunder and lightning.
For the ominous roar and flash
حُفِظَwas safeguarded القَريضُpoetry فَماso not يُضَيَّعُis neglected حَقُّهُits due
أَبَداًever وَأَنتَand you لَهُof it مِنَamong العُشّاقِthe lovers
Poetry is safeguarded, so its due is not neglected
The ode is preserved, its right not wasted
Ever, while you are among its lovers.
For you are among its lovers
هائِنَّهُbehold, indeed it وَعَطاؤُكَand your giving الجَمُّabundant اللُهىgifts
أَخَوانِtwo brothers ذاthis one فانٍfleeting وَهَذاand this one باقِenduring
Behold, it and your giving, rich in bounty,
Its existence and your abundant giving
Are brothers: one is fleeting, the other endures.
Are brothers, one transient, one forever
أُثنيI praise عَلَيكَupon you بِماfor that which بَسَطتَyou opened بِهِwith it يَديmy hand
وَحَلَلتَand you loosed مِنfrom أَسرِcaptivity الزَمانِtime وَثاقيmy bonds
I praise you for that with which you opened my hand,
I praise you for what you have bestowed on me
And loosed my bonds from Time's captivity.
And freed from the shackles of time
هِيَit هِمَّةٌhigh resolve لَوif قيسَتِwere measured الدُنياthe world بِهاagainst it
فَضُلَتexceeded جَوانِبُهاits bounds عَنِbeyond الآفاقِthe horizons
It is a high resolve: were the world measured against it,
It is an ambition, if the world was measured by it
Its bounds would extend beyond the horizons.
Its horizons would be too confined
كُنتَyou were الغَريبَthe stranger فَمُذso since عَرَفتُكَI came to know you عادَreturned ليto me
أُنسيmy comfort وَأَصبَحَتِand became العِراقُIraq عِراقيmy Iraq
You were a stranger; since I came to know you, I regained
You were a stranger, since I knew you
My comfort, and Iraq became my own Iraq.
My company returned, Iraq became my Iraq
