يا أَبا صالِحٍ صَديقَ الصَلاحِ
وَشَقيقَand brother of النَدىgenerosity وَتِربَand peer of السَماحِmunificence
وَشَقيقَ النَدى وَتِربَ السَماحِ
O Abu Salih, friend of righteousness,
O Abu Salih, friend of righteousness
and brother of generosity, and peer of munificence.
And brother of dew and twig of tolerance
لاnot أَظُنُّI think الصَباحَthe morning يوفيmeasures up بِإِشراto the radiance (word continues)
لا أَظُنُّ الصَباحَ يوفي بِإِشرا
قِcompletion of 'radiance' خِلالٍvirtues فيin ساحَتَيكَyour two courtyards صِباحِbright
قِ خِلالٍ في ساحَتَيكَ صِباحِ
I do not think morning measures up to the radiance
I don't think the morning fulfills radiance
of bright virtues within your two courtyards.
In your courtyard, good morning
أَيُّwhat شَيءٍthing يَفيmatches بِعَرفِكَyour fragrance or beneficence إِلّاexcept
أَيُّ شَيءٍ يَفي بِعَرفِكَ إِلّا
أَرَجُaroma of المِسكِmusk فيin نَسيمِthe breeze of الرِياحِthe winds
أَرَجُ المِسكِ في نَسيمِ الرِياحِ
What can match your fragrance except
What thing pays your honor unless
musk's aroma on the breath of the winds?
Scents of musk in the breeze of wind
غَيرَexcept أَنَّthat الفُتُوَّةَgallantry إِنجَذَبَتwas drawn away مِنfrom
غَيرَ أَنَّ الفُتُوَّةَ إِنجَذَبَت مِن
كَyou (completes 'from you') بِمَعدىًby a detour إِلىtoward الصِباyouth وَمَراحِand merriment
كَ بِمَعدىً إِلى الصِبا وَمَراحِ
Yet gallantry has been drawn away from
Except youth has been attracted
you, diverted toward youth and merriment,
To you overflowing into boyhood and relaxation
حَيثُwhere ذَلَّwas humbled الحِجىreason وَعَزَّand grew mighty التَصابيyouthful dalliance
حَيثُ ذَلَّ الحِجى وَعَزَّ التَصابي
وَأَقامَand stayed الهَوىpassion وَسارَand departed اللاحيthe reprover
وَأَقامَ الهَوى وَسارَ اللاحي
where reason is humbled and youthful dalliance exalted,
Where speech faltered and zeal waned
and passion stays, and the reprover departs.
And desire resided and the ardent persisted
مُنعِظُsexually erect الطَرفِthe gaze لاnot يَزالُceases يُواليkeeps sending
مُنعِظُ الطَرفِ لا يَزالُ يُوالي
لَحَظاتٍglances يُحبِلنَmake pregnant قَبلَbefore النِكاحِintercourse
لَحَظاتٍ يُحبِلنَ قَبلَ النِكاحِ
With an erect gaze, he ceaselessly casts
The flirtatious glance still continues
glances that impregnate before intercourse.
To fleeting moments pregnant before marriage
وَمُغيرٌand a raider عَلىupon الأَصابِعِthe fingers بِاللَمby touching (word continues)
وَمُغيرٌ عَلى الأَصابِعِ بِاللَم
سِcompletion of 'touching' لَهاof them فيat أَسافِلِthe bottoms of الأَقداحِthe goblets
سِ لَها في أَسافِلِ الأَقداحِ

أَوor تَبيتُspend the night التِراسُthe shields فيin غَيرِabsence of حَربٍwar
أَو تَبيتُ التِراسُ في غَيرِ حَربٍ
يَتَصَدَّعنَsplit apart عَنaway from صُدورِthe foreparts of الرِماحِthe spears
يَتَصَدَّعنَ عَن صُدورِ الرِماحِ
Or shields spend the night, though there is no war,
Or the tents spend the night in no war
splitting open around the spearheads.
Cracking from the chests of lances
نَحنُwe فيin قُطعَةٍestrangement وَشُغلُكَand your preoccupation عَنّاaway from us
نَحنُ في قُطعَةٍ وَشُغلُكَ عَنّا
بِوِصالِby coupling with الأَستاهِanuses وَالأَحراحِand vulvas
بِوِصالِ الأَستاهِ وَالأَحراحِ
We are estranged, while you are distracted from us
We are in a piece and your occupation from us
by coupling with anuses and vulvas.
Is in joining professors and minds
وَلَعَمريand by my life لَرُبَّindeed, many a يَومٍday شَفَعناwe paired
وَلَعَمري لَرُبَّ يَومٍ شَفَعنا
مِنكَfrom you سُقياa draught of النَدىgenerosity بِسُقياwith a draught of الراحِwine
مِنكَ سُقيا النَدى بِسُقيا الراحِ
And by my life, on many a day we paired
And, by my life, many a day we interceded
your draughts of generosity with draughts of wine.
From you, quenching of dew with quenching of comfort
