فَقدُthe loss أَخِلّايَof my dear friends وَإِخوانيand my brothers
My anguish and sorrows were redoubled
My sorrows and worries have doubled,
by the loss of my dear friends and brothers.
For I have lost my friends and brothers.
إِنَّindeed الَّذيthat which أَسخَطَنيangered me لَوhad رَمىaimed
فِيَّin my case إِلىtoward العَدلِjustice لَأَرضانيwould have pleased me
Indeed, what angered me, had it aimed
He who has angered me - if he were just,
at justice in my case, would have pleased me.
Would appease me.
وَلِلَّياليand for the nights فيin تَصاريفِهاtheir changing turns
حُكمانِtwo judgments فيماin what رابَناtroubled us اثنانِtwo
And the nights, in their shifting turns, have
The nights in their cycles,
two judgments in what has troubled us.
Rule over the quarrel of two companions.
وَفيand in خُطوبِcalamities الدَهرِof time إِنif فُتِّشَتare examined
طَعمانِtwo flavors مِنof شُهدٍhoney وَخُطبانِand bitter herbs
And in time's calamities, if examined,
In the tribulations of fate, if examined,
lie two flavors: honey and bitter herbs.
Are two tastes - of sweetness and bitterness.

And the days' custom, in what they do,
The habit of days in their deeds
is to mingle harm with kindness.
Mix good and evil.

Those heights of glory wail in grief for
Those heights rely steadfastly
their Ayyub, son of Sulayman.
On Ayyub son of Suleiman.

For a man who, in noble leadership, was never found
Upon a man who was not accustomed in his pursuits
feeble in effort or remiss.
To weakness of effort or retreat.

He lies at rest, gone, and generosity follows him;
Generosity has passed and what remains
no first remains to hope for, nor a second.
Is neither first to be hoped for nor last.

Patience, Abu al-Abbas, patience in the face of
Patience, oh Abu Al-Abbas, patience
a bereavement grievous to endure.
In an intricate, serious matter.

And a calamity whose lingering effects set flowing
An affliction whose consequences
the survivor's tears for the departed.
Flow between the eternal and the ephemeral.
