كُنتَmay you be المُعَزّىthe one consoled بِفَقديfor my loss
وَعِشتَand may you live ماas long as عِشتَyou live بَعديafter me
May you be the one consoled for my loss,
You were my consolation when I lost her,
And live on after me all your days.
And you lived on after me,

A brother of mine gave me
A friend gifted me,
An offspring of musk and roses,
A necklace of musk and roses,

More delicate than the words of a lovesick lover
Softer than the words of a love-struck youth
Who lamented the burning heat of longing.
Complaining of passion's heat,
كأَنَّهُas though it إِنif تَجِئناyou come to us
بِلاwithout اِنتِظارٍwaiting وَوَعدِand a promise
As though it were [saying]: “If you come to us
As if, without waiting or promise,
Without waiting or a promise,
You have this day brought me joy

Then robe me in joy
By coming to be with me.
By being with me today.”
