سَقىmay water دارُthe dwelling of لَيلىLayla حَيثُwhere حَلَّتsettled رُسومُهاher traces
سَقى دارُ لَيلى حَيثُ حَلَّت رُسومُها
عِهادٌrecurring showers مِنَfrom الوَسمِيِّearly-autumn rain وُطفٌthick and heavy غُيومُهاtheir clouds
عِهادٌ مِنَ الوَسمِيِّ وُطفٌ غُيومُها
May Layla's dwelling, where her traces lie, be watered
The abode of Layla has rained where her traces settled,
By recurring early-autumn rains whose clouds hang heavy.
Clouds pouring copiously from al-Wasm,
فَكَمand how many لَيلَةٍa night أَهدَتbrought إِلَيَّto me خَيالَهاher apparition
فَكَم لَيلَةٍ أَهدَت إِلَيَّ خَيالَها
وَسَهلُwhile the plains الفَيافيof the deserts دونَهاbetween me and her وَحُزومُهاand their ridges
وَسَهلُ الفَيافي دونَها وَحُزومُها
How many a night has brought her apparition to me,
So how many a night has she sent me her apparition,
With desert plains and ridges lying between us.
And how easy the terrain beyond her and her bundles.
تَطيبُgrow fragrant بِمَسراهاwith her night passage البِلادُthe lands إِذاwhen سَرَتshe travels by night
تَطيبُ بِمَسراها البِلادُ إِذا سَرَت
فَيَنعُمُso grows sweet رَيّاهاtheir scent وَيَصفوand grows pure نَسيمُهاtheir breeze
فَيَنعُمُ رَيّاها وَيَصفو نَسيمُها
The lands grow fragrant with her night passage when she travels;
The lands thrive through her travel,
So their scent grows sweet, and their breeze grows pure.
When she moves, her onlooker thrives and her breeze clears.
إِذاwhen ذَكَرَتكِremembers you النَفسُthe soul شَوقاًin longing تَتابَعَتfollow one another
إِذا ذَكَرَتكِ النَفسُ شَوقاً تَتابَعَت
لِذِكراكِat the thought of you أُحدانُsingle drops الدُموعِof tears وَتومُهاand their paired drops
لِذِكراكِ أُحدانُ الدُموعِ وَتومُها
When my soul recalls you in longing, there stream
When the soul remembers you in longing,
At the thought of you, tears singly and in pairs.
The tears for remembering you pour and collect.
قَضىdecreed اللَهُGod أَنّيthat I مِنكِbecause of you ضامِنُbound to bear لَوعَةٍburning anguish
قَضى اللَهُ أَنّي مِنكِ ضامِنُ لَوعَةٍ
تَقَضّىpass away اللَياليthe nights وَهيَwhile it باقٍremaining مَقيمُهاits abiding presence
تَقَضّى اللَيالي وَهيَ باقٍ مَقيمُها
God has decreed that, because of you, I bear burning anguish;
God has ordained that I suffer agony from you,
The nights pass away, yet that grief stays and abides.
Nights pass while it remains permanent.
أَميلُI turn بِقَلبيmy heart عَنكِaway from you ثُمَّthen أَرُدُّهُI bring it back
أَميلُ بِقَلبي عَنكِ ثُمَّ أَرُدُّهُ
وَأَعذِرُand I excuse نَفسيmyself فيكِregarding you ثُمَّthen أَلومُهاI blame it
وَأَعذِرُ نَفسي فيكِ ثُمَّ أَلومُها
I turn my heart away from you, then bring it back,
I incline with my heart away from you, then return it,
And excuse myself for loving you, then reproach myself.
And I excuse myself regarding you, then blame it.
إِذاwhen المُهتَديal-Muhtadi بِاللَهِbi-llah; by God عُدَّتare counted خِلالُهُhis virtues
إِذا المُهتَدي بِاللَهِ عُدَّت خِلالُهُ
حَسِبتَyou would think السَماءَthe sky كاثَرَتكَvied to outnumber you نُجومُهاits stars
حَسِبتَ السَماءَ كاثَرَتكَ نُجومُها
When al-Muhtadi bi-llah's virtues are counted,
When the guided through God consider their morals,
You would think the sky's stars were vying to outnumber you.
You think the sky has multiplied its stars.
لَقَدindeed خَوَّلَbestowed upon اللَهُGod الإِمامَthe imam مُحَمَّداًMuhammad
لَقَد خَوَّلَ اللَهُ الإِمامَ مُحَمَّداً
خُصوصَa special share of مَعالٍlofty virtues فيamong قُرَيشٍQuraysh عُمومُهاtheir general prevalence
خُصوصَ مَعالٍ في قُرَيشٍ عُمومُها
God has indeed bestowed upon the imam Muhammad
God has given the imam Muhammad
A special measure of virtues common to Quraysh.
Special perfections among all of Quraysh.
أُبُوَّتُهُhis forefathers مِنهاfrom among them خَلائِفُهاtheir caliphs الأُلىwho
أُبُوَّتُهُ مِنها خَلائِفُها الأُلى
لَهاtheirs are فَضلُهاtheir distinction فيin النائِباتِcalamities وَخيمُهاand their character
لَها فَضلُها في النائِباتِ وَخيمُها
His forefathers among them are their caliphs, who
His successorship from it and his family
Have their distinction and noble character amid calamities.
With their preference in the deputies and protectors.
وَلَيسَand is not حَديثُthe new المَكرُماتِof noble deeds بِكائِنٍin existence
وَلَيسَ حَديثُ المَكرُماتِ بِكائِنٍ
يَدَthroughout الدَهرِtime إِلّاexcept حَيثُwhere كانَexisted قَديمُهاtheir ancient forms
يَدَ الدَهرِ إِلّا حَيثُ كانَ قَديمُها
And no new noble deeds can come to be
The discourse of honors is not happening,
Through all time, except where the old ones stood.
Except where its ancientness was in the days of time.
أَقَرَّتacknowledged لَهُto him بِالفَضلِexcellence أُمَّةُthe community of أَحمَدٍAhmad
أَقَرَّت لَهُ بِالفَضلِ أُمَّةُ أَحمَدٍ
فَدانَso submitted لَهُto him مُعوَجُّهاits crooked وَقَويمُهاand its upright
فَدانَ لَهُ مُعوَجُّها وَقَويمُها
Ahmad's community acknowledged his excellence,
The community of Ahmad has confessed to him
So its crooked and its upright alike submitted to him.
The preference so its twisted and upright submitted to him.
وَلَوand if جَحَدَتهُit denied him ذَلِكَthat الحَقَّright لَمnot تَكُنwould be
وَلَو جَحَدَتهُ ذَلِكَ الحَقَّ لَم تَكُن
لِتَبرَحَto escape إِلّاexcept وَالنُجومُwhile the stars رُجومُهاmissiles against it
لِتَبرَحَ إِلّا وَالنُجومُ رُجومُها
And had it denied him that right, it could not
And if they had rejected that right, they would not
Have escaped without the stars becoming missiles against it.
Have ceased movement until the stars were stoning them.
هَنَتكَmay they gladden you أَميرَCommander of المُؤمِنينَthe Faithful مَواهِبٌgifts
هَنَتكَ أَميرَ المُؤمِنينَ مَواهِبٌ
مِنَfrom اللَهِGod مَشكورٌgratefully acknowledged لَدَيكَby you جَسيمُهاtheir great bounty
مِنَ اللَهِ مَشكورٌ لَدَيكَ جَسيمُها
May gifts bring you joy, Commander of the Faithful,
Gifts from God have come to the prince of the faithful,
From God, their great bounty gratefully acknowledged by you.
Plentiful with you, their great amount acknowledged.
وَتَأييدُand strengthening دينِthe religion of اللَهِGod إِذwhen رُدَّwas entrusted أَمرُهُits charge
وَتَأييدُ دينِ اللَهِ إِذ رُدَّ أَمرُهُ
إِلَيكَto you فَرَوّىso deliberated carefully فيover الأُمورِaffairs عَليمُهاone who knows them well
إِلَيكَ فَرَوّى في الأُمورِ عَليمُها
And the strengthening of God's religion, when its charge was entrusted
And support of the religion of God when its command
To you, so one versed in affairs weighed them carefully.
Returned to you, expert in all matters.
بَنوthe sons of هاشِمٍHashim فيin كُلِّevery شَرقٍeast وَمَغرِبٍand west
بَنو هاشِمٍ في كُلِّ شَرقٍ وَمَغرِبٍ
كِرامُthe noble ones بَنيamong the sons of الدُنياthe world وَأَنتَand you كَريمُهاtheir noblest
كِرامُ بَني الدُنيا وَأَنتَ كَريمُها
The sons of Hashim, throughout east and west,
The clan of Hashim in every east and west
Are the noble sons of this world, and you are their noblest.
Are the nobles of the people of the world and you are its noble one.
إِذاwhen ماever مَشَتthey walk فيat جانِبَيكِyour two sides بِأَوجُهٍwith faces
إِذا ما مَشَت في جانِبَيكِ بِأَوجُهٍ
تَهَضَّمُbelittle أَقمارَthe moons of الدُجىthe darkness وَتَضيمُهاand wrong them
تَهَضَّمُ أَقمارَ الدُجى وَتَضيمُها
Whenever they walk at your two sides with faces
When they walk on your two sides with faces
That belittle the moons of darkness and put them to shame,
That humble the moons of nighttime and humiliate them.
رَأَيتُI saw قُرَيشاًQuraysh حَيثُwhere أُكمِلَwas perfected مَجدُهاits glory
رَأَيتُ قُرَيشاً حَيثُ أُكمِلَ مَجدُها
وَتَمَّتand were completed مَساعيهاits endeavors وَثابَتand returned حُلومُهاits wisdom
وَتَمَّت مَساعيها وَثابَت حُلومُها
I see Quraysh where its glory has been perfected,
I saw Quraysh when their glory was perfected
And its endeavors fulfilled, its wisdom restored.
Their endeavors completed and their dreams realized.
تَوالىcame in succession سَوادُthe blackness of الريشِthe feathers مِنfrom عِندِthe presence of صالِحٍSalih
تَوالى سَوادُ الريشِ مِن عِندِ صالِحٍ
إِلَيكَto you بِأَخبارٍwith news يَسُرُّdelights قُدومُهاits arrival
إِلَيكَ بِأَخبارٍ يَسُرُّ قُدومُها
Black-feathered birds came in succession from Salih
The blackness of feathers followed one after another
To you, bearing news whose arrival brings delight.
From Salih to you with news that pleases their arrival,
مُحَلِّقَةًsoaring يُنبيannounces عَنِof النَصرِvictory نُطقُهاtheir speech
مُحَلِّقَةً يُنبي عَنِ النَصرِ نُطقُها
وَقَبلَكَand before you ماindeed قَدalready كانَhad been طالَlasted long وُجومُهاtheir gloomy silence
وَقَبلَكَ ما قَد كانَ طالَ وُجومُها
Soaring high, their speech proclaims victory,
Circling, their speech gives tidings of victory,
And before you their gloomy silence had long endured.
While previously their aspect was prolonged gloom.
نُخَبِّرُwe report عَنabout تِلكَthose الخَوارِجِKharijites أَنَّهُthat he
نُخَبِّرُ عَن تِلكَ الخَوارِجِ أَنَّهُ
هَوىfell مُكرَهاًagainst his will تَحتَbeneath السُيوفِthe swords عَظيمُهاtheir mighty leader
هَوى مُكرَهاً تَحتَ السُيوفِ عَظيمُها
We report of those Kharijites that
We give news of those dissenters that
Their mighty chief fell unwillingly beneath the swords.
Their great numbers fell reluctantly beneath the swords.
أَرىI see حَوزَةَthe domain of الإِسلامِIslam حينَwhen وَليتَهاyou took charge of it
أَرى حَوزَةَ الإِسلامِ حينَ وَليتَها
تُخَرِّمَwas cut down باغيهاits aggressor وَحيطَand was guarded حَريمُهاits sacred bounds
تُخَرِّمَ باغيها وَحيطَ حَريمُها
I see Islam's domain, since you took charge of it,
I see the fortress of Islam when you took responsibility for it,
Its aggressor cut down and its sacred bounds guarded.
It ruins those who rebel against it and protects its sanctity.
تَدارَكَrecovered مَظلومُthe wronged one among الرَعِيَّةِthe subjects حَقَّهُhis right
تَدارَكَ مَظلومُ الرَعِيَّةِ حَقَّهُ
وَخَلّىand cleared لَهُfor him وَجهَthe course of الطَريقِthe road ظَلومُهاtheir oppressor
وَخَلّى لَهُ وَجهَ الطَريقِ ظَلومُها
The wronged subject recovered his right,
The oppressed regained their due right,
And their oppressor cleared the road before him.
And its unfairness made way for them on the path.
وَبَصبَصَand wagged their tails أَهلُthe perpetrators of العَيثِhavoc حينَwhen هَداهُمُhe guided them
وَبَصبَصَ أَهلُ العَيثِ حينَ هَداهُمُ
أَخوa man of سَطَواتٍfierce blows ماnot يُبِلُّrecovers سَليمُهاone wounded by them
أَخو سَطَواتٍ ما يُبِلُّ سَليمُها
And the makers of havoc wagged their tails when guided
And the people of wickedness were guided when you guided them,
By a wielder of fierce blows, whose stricken never recover.
Brother of firmness that does not weaken or flag.
وَقَدand indeed أَعتَتِgave (uncertain reading) الرومُthe Romans الَّذيwhat طولِبَتthey were asked بِهِfor it
وَقَد أَعتَتِ الرومُ الَّذي طولِبَت بِهِ
بِأَبريقَat Abriq لَمّاwhen خُبِّرَتthey were informed مِنfrom غَريمُهاtheir adversary
بِأَبريقَ لَمّا خُبِّرَت مِن غَريمُها
And the Romans granted what was demanded of them
And Rome which you have been promised has been startled
At Abriq, when informed by their adversary.
By a drinking vessel when it was told of its adversary.
هَلِis ...? الدينُreligion إِلّاanything but فيin جِهادٍreligious warfare تَقودُناyou lead us
هَلِ الدينُ إِلّا في جِهادٍ تَقودُنا
إِلَيهِto it عِجالاًswiftly أَوor صَلاةٍprayer تُقيمُهاyou establish it
إِلَيهِ عِجالاً أَو صَلاةٍ تُقيمُها
Is religion anything but jihad—you lead us
Is religion anything but jihad you lead us to promptly?
Swiftly to it—or prayer that you establish?
Or a prayer you stand firm to perform?
تَقَضَّتpassed away لَياليthe nights of الشَهرِthe month إِلّاexcept بَقِيَّةًa remnant
تَقَضَّت لَيالي الشَهرِ إِلّا بَقِيَّةً
تَهَجَدُyou pray by night فيهاduring them جاهِداًstriving earnestly أَوor تَقومُهاyou keep vigil through them
تَهَجَدُ فيها جاهِداً أَو تَقومُها
The month's nights have passed, save a remnant
The nights of the month passed except for a remainder
In which you strive in night prayer or keep vigil.
In which a fighter keeps vigil or stands in prayer.
وَأَيسَرُand the easiest ماwhat قَدَّمتَyou offered لِلَّهِto God طالِباًseeking
وَأَيسَرُ ما قَدَّمتَ لِلَّهِ طالِباً
لِمِرضاتِهِfor His pleasure أَيّامُdays of فَرضٍobligation تَصومُهاyou fast through them
لِمِرضاتِهِ أَيّامُ فَرضٍ تَصومُها
And the easiest of what you have offered God, seeking
And the easiest thing you presented to God seeking
His pleasure, is the prescribed days you spend fasting.
His approval were days of obligatory fasting you observed.
هَجَرتَyou forsook المَلاهيamusements حِسبَةًseeking divine reward وَتَفَرُّداًand solitary devotion
هَجَرتَ المَلاهي حِسبَةً وَتَفَرُّداً
بِئاياتِto the verses of ذِكرِthe remembrance of اللَهِGod يُتلىis recited حَكيمُهاtheir wise words
بِئاياتِ ذِكرِ اللَهِ يُتلى حَكيمُها
You forsook amusements for divine reward and solitary devotion
You abandoned diversions in self-discipline and isolation
To the verses of God's remembrance, whose wise words are recited.
In the verses of the remembrance of God recited by the Wise.
وَأَخلَلتَand you forsook بِاللَذّاتِpleasures وَهيَthough they أَوانِسٌwelcoming
وَأَخلَلتَ بِاللَذّاتِ وَهيَ أَوانِسٌ
مَرابِعُهاtheir springtime haunts مُستَحسَناتٌadmired رُسومُهاtheir traces
مَرابِعُها مُستَحسَناتٌ رُسومُها
And you forsook pleasures, though welcoming
You mixed with pleasures though they are companions
Were their springtime haunts, and lovely their traces.
Whose dwelling places and forms are delightful.
وَماand not تَحسُنُis beautiful الدُنياthe world إِذاif هِيَit لَمnot تُعَنis aided
وَما تَحسُنُ الدُنيا إِذا هِيَ لَم تُعَن
بِآخِرَةٍby a hereafter حَسناءَbeautiful يَبقىendures نَعيمُهاits bliss
بِآخِرَةٍ حَسناءَ يَبقى نَعيمُها
And this world has no beauty if it is not supported
The world is not beautiful unless it is paired
By a beautiful hereafter whose bliss endures.
With a beautiful afterlife where its bliss remains.
بَقاؤُكَyour continued presence فيناamong us نِعمَةُthe blessing of اللَهِGod عِندَناto us
بَقاؤُكَ فينا نِعمَةُ اللَهِ عِندَنا
فَنَحنُso we بِأَوفىwith the fullest شُكرِهاthanks for it نَستَديمُهاseek to perpetuate it
فَنَحنُ بِأَوفى شُكرِها نَستَديمُها
Your continued presence among us is God's blessing to us;
You remaining with us is God's blessing upon us,
So with the fullest thanks for it, we seek to make it last.
So we seek to perpetuate it with the fullest gratitude.
