جُعِلتَmay I be made فِداكَyour ransom ليI have خَبَرٌa tale طَريفٌamusing
وَأَنتَand you بِكُلِّin every مَكرُمَةٍnoble deed خَبيرُwell versed
May I be your ransom! I have an amusing tale,
I offer myself for your sake, for I have pleasant news,
and you are versed in every noble deed.
And you are well-versed in every honorable deed.
غَداةَon the morning of النَحرِthe sacrifice يَنحَرُslaughters كُلُّevery قَومٍcommunity
وَلاand no شاةٌsheep لَدَيَّin my possession وَلاand no بَعيرُcamel
On the morning of sacrifice, every community slaughters,
On the morning of the Feast, each tribe slaughters,
yet I have neither sheep nor camel.
Yet I have no sheep nor camel to offer.
بَلىyes indeed عِنديI have حِمارٌa donkey ليof my own فَقُلso tell ليme
أَتَقبَلُare they accepted? مِنfrom مُضَحّيهاone who sacrifices them الحَميرُdonkeys
Yes, I have a donkey of my own; so tell me:
Rather I have a donkey - so tell me,
are donkeys accepted from one who sacrifices them?
Will the sanctified accept my humble gift?
لَئِنif indeed لَمnot تَفدِهِyou ransom him تَفديكَmay it ransom you نَفسيmy soul
بِذَبحٍwith a sacrificial animal فَهوَthen he is فيon غَدِهِhis next day نَحيرُslaughtered
If you do not ransom him—may my soul ransom you—
If you are not ransomed, I shall ransom you with my soul,
with a sacrificial animal, he will be slaughtered tomorrow.
Slaughtered as an offering - so shall my donkey be slain.
