    May good be yours—what can I offer with ease, and what with all my effort,

    when the house of Ḥumayd, to its last member, is with me?

    فَقُل في خُراسانٍ وَإِن شِئتَ في نَجدِ

    The two ṭāʾs followed in succession: Ṭūs and Ṭayyiʾ;

    so speak of Khurāsān, and, if you wish, of Najd.

    They came to me without an appointment; and if you could not find for them

    their wine, they all departed together by appointment.

    And I have never seen a friend like wine: when it turns away,

    its companions and loving friends shun you on its account.

    And among the young men’s misfortunes was that they went out in the morning

    at Shaʿbān’s end, at the first bloom of roses.

    Tomorrow pure water becomes forbidden, and away go

    forms of pleasure whose loss brings sorrow.

    Help us through a day when we escort our revelry

    to a night when its fatal hour comes.

    For I cannot count how many favors of yours have made

    my hands generous, or how much glory from you has built up my glory.

    بَلِ النِعمَةُ البَيضاءُ في شِركَةِ الحَمدِ

    And the radiant blessing lies not in sharing wealth;

    rather, the radiant blessing lies in sharing praise.
