It is little enough for her that I am enamored of her, lovesick,
Little does she know that I'm madly in love
And that my heart has known nothing but longing for her.
And that none but her has captivated my heart

I offered appeasement until her anger ended;
I've been so patient just to appease her anger
Yet the maker of false grievances still reproaches after being appeased.
Yet after pleasing her, she still reproaches me

I've not seen anything like love that tricks
The discerning among men, even after love had been tested.
The minds of men after love gets tested

And I yearn for her image and frequently visit
Visits from a phantom whose visits come at intervals.
An apparition though its visits are rare

How can I be lovesick after my hair has grayed, and after
From where can I find vigor after my old age?
The man untouched by love swore that the gray-haired do not yearn?
After the messenger said gray hair lacks vigor

Either my nights comfort my sadness
For my endurance—those tracts of sand and dunes?
Or my mornings scare me with those calamities

I've accepted my love sickness and never wished
The caravan to halt with me at the dwelling.
To stop my journey where the caravan halted

By the flowing tears of my eyes, my companions would have rebuked me.
Tears would flow down my eyes reproached by my friends

The talebearer has indeed severed, by fabricating what he spread
The slanderer cut relations with his fabrications
In speech, what the keen, cutting sword cannot sever.
That not even a sharp sword can sever

So I became in Baghdad without shade or
Nor was life tender and moist in its luxuriance.
Lush life in its fertile thickets

While my desires are in Syria being fulfilled?

Alas! What a caravan that can deliver a message
To Syria—unless letters bear it.
To Syria unless it's carried in books!

My intention to avoid him was a tribulation and wealth
A lifetime's wealth—is the least he gives or bestows.
Is the least of fortunes' gifts or generosity

They deserved the torment like the people of Thamud
The descent of punishment; the eunuch was their camel calf.
And the punishment was decisive for them

So distance would prevent what nearness grants
