يَعُدُّ الغَيَّ فيكِ مِنَ الرَشادِ
Indeed, by my love for you—an earnest man's oath,
For your love I swore by my perseverance
who counts error in loving you as right guidance.
That staying away from you is the right path

Parting from you has indeed kindled the fire of my longing,
Parting from you kindled a fire in my love
and made my eye acquainted with sleeplessness.
And showed between my eyes and sleeplessness

Will time bring us back a day
with one more day of meeting you?
Of meeting you that I yearn for more?

May the talebearers relish my excessive longing,
Happy are the slanderers in their intense longing
and my presence here, with my passion plain to see.
While I am present but my love is lost

And the cure for my affliction lay in a place
The cure for my condition was in a place
to which we might be returned, or in a time restored.
We will return to or in an appointed time

So may the morning rainclouds never cease to pour
My sad song continues to protect me
among the camps of the women departing at dawn in litters.
Amidst the houses of sadness, the song walks

They went far off with what I sought and drew away a heart
It needed and pulled a heart that refused
that resisted, then submitted to the reins.
Then accompanied me on my journey

I did not call you out of longing
I hastened to it and answered the caller.
Except I hastened, obedient to the caller

Being far from her was more beloved
to the yearning lover than union from afar.
To the longing lover than the union of distances

The riding camels will bring me to what I seek,
The ambitions will reach me and the seas
and the seas will free me from needing scant pools.
Will suffice me instead of the sands

And I deem Fath's generosity too great to liken
I consider it great to be compared to Fatah
to a cloud's downpour or a valley's torrent.
Like a generous cloud or valley stream
