أَماIndeed وَالَّذيby Him who أَعطاكَgranted you فَضلاًexcellence وَبَسطَةًand preeminence
عَلىover كُلِّevery حَيٍّliving being وَاِصطَفاكَand chose you عَلىabove الخَلقِcreation
Indeed, by Him who granted you excellence and preeminence
By Him who gave you virtue and generosity
over every living being, and chose you above all creation,
Above all living beings and chose you above creation
لَقَدindeed سُستَناyou governed us بِالعَدلِwith justice وَالبَذلِand generosity مُنعِماًbestowing favors
وَعُدتَand you favored عَلَيناupon us بِالأَناةِwith forbearance وَبِالرِفقِand with gentleness
you have governed us with justice and generosity, bestowing favors,
You have been just and generous towards us
and favored us with forbearance and gentleness.
And returned to us with patience and gentleness
وَإِنّاand indeed we نَرىsee سيماthe features النَبِيِّof the Prophet مُحَمَّدٍMuhammad
وَسُنَّتَهُand his way فيin وَجهِكَyour face الضاحِكِsmiling الطَلقِopen and cheerful
And we see the features of the Prophet Muhammad
We see the traits of Prophet Muhammad
and his way in your smiling, open countenance.
In your smiling and serene face
وَقَدand indeed عَلِمَتknows تِلكَthat العِمامَةُturban أَنَّهاthat it
تُلاثُis wound عَلىaround تِلكَthat النَجابَةِnobility وَالعِتقِand noble birth
And that turban knows full well that it
That turban knows it adorns
is wound around such nobility and noble birth.
That elegant neck and freedom
تَدارَكتَyou rescued بِالإِحسانِwith kindness حِمصَHoms وَأَهلَهاand its people
وَقَدand already قارَفواthey had committed فِعلَdeeds الإِساءَةِof wrongdoing وَالخُرقِand folly
You rescued Homs and its people with kindness,
With kindness you pardoned Homs and its people
though they had committed deeds of wrongdoing and folly.
Though they committed acts of wrongdoing and rebellion
طَلَعتَyou rose لَهُمbefore them وَقتَat the time of الشُروقِsunrise فَعايَنواso they beheld
سَناthe radiance الشَمسِof the sun مِنfrom أُفقٍa horizon وَوَجهَكَand your face مِنfrom أُفقِa horizon
You rose before them at sunrise, and they beheld
You rose for them at daybreak so they witnessed
the sun’s radiance from one horizon, and your face from another.
The sun from one horizon and your face from another
وَماand never عايَنواthey beheld شَمسَينِtwo suns قَبلَهُماbefore them both التَقىmet
ضِياؤُهُماtheir light وَفقاًin harmony مِنَfrom الغَربِthe west وَالشَرقِand the east
Nor before these two had they seen two suns whose
Never before had they seen two suns meet
light met in harmony, from the west and the east.
With radiance from West and East in accord
أَرَيتَهُمُyou showed them إِذwhen ذاكَthat قُدرَةَthe power قادِرٍof a powerful one
وَعَفوَand the pardon مُحِبٍّof a lover لِلسَلامَةِof safety مُستَبقِwho spares lives
You showed them then the power of one who is powerful,
You showed them the power of the Almighty
and the pardon of one who cherishes safety and spares lives.
And the forgiveness of a lover of peace
وَلَوand had شِئتَyou wished طاحواthey would have fallen بِالسُيوفِby swords وَبِالقَناand by spears
وَبِاللَهذَمِيّاتِand by broad-headed lances المُذَرَّبَةِsharpened الزُرقِblue
And had you wished, they would have fallen to swords and spears,
Had you wished swords and spears would have felled them
and to broad-headed lances, keenly sharpened and blue.
And the well-adorned blue lances would have pierced them
مَنَنتَyou bestowed favor عَلَيهِمupon them بِالحَياةِwith life فَأَصبَحواso they became
مَواليكَyour freedmen فازواthey won مِنكَfrom you بِالمَنِّfavor وَالعِتقِand freedom
You bestowed life upon them, and they became
You graced them with life so they became
your freedmen, winning favor and freedom from you.
Your loyalists, winning your bounty and freedom
وَإِنَّand indeed وَلاءَloyalty to المُعتِقينَthose who free مِنَfrom الرَدىdeath
يَفوقُsurpasses وَلاءَloyalty to المُعتِقينَthose who free مِنَfrom الرِقِّslavery
And loyalty to those who free others from death
For loyalty of freed slaves is stauncher
surpasses loyalty to those who free them from slavery.
Than loyalty of slaves still in bondage
بَقيتَmay you endure أَميرَCommander المُؤمِنينَof the Faithful لِأُمَّةٍfor a nation

May you endure, Commander of the Faithful, for a nation
You remained commander of the faithful for a nation
you have led along the clear path to truth.
You led rightly upon the path of truth
بِوَجهِكَthrough your countenance تَستَعديshe seeks redress عَلىagainst الدَهرِTime كُلَّماwhenever

Through your countenance she seeks redress against Time whenever
With your face you take revenge on fate whenever
he wrongs her, as once she sought rain through your forefather.
It does evil just as your grandfather summoned rain
