I see dwellings among the tangled arak trees,
I see among the twisting sands, dwellings,
I see, amidst the tangled roots of arak trees, old dwelling places,
still standing—if only their oryxes stood there too.
If only their allure were dwellings.
Standing tall, though I wish the gazelles who dwelt there were standing too.

So halt if you are excused, in them,
Halt there to aid my grief if you accept my excuse,
and travel far from them if you reproach me.
And pass them by if you refuse them.
Or ride far away from them if you intend to blame.

We met the dwellings at al-Liwa, as though
We met the singing girls in the twisting sands, as though
We encountered the ruins at al-Liwa, and it seemed as though
we met the companionable beauties without their ornaments.
We met the sociable, flirtatious ones.
We were meeting the fair maidens themselves, stripped of their adornments.

Eyes are the death of lovers; I had never
And the eyes kill the lovers, and I hadn't thought
It is the eyes of beauties that slay lovers, yet I did not think
thought the faded traces could be killers.
The pictured veils were deadly.
That effaced ruins could also serve as killers.

Scorching noons of longing—if separation's hand wished,
Longing's migrants, if the hand of fate would will it,
Scorching noons of longing; had the hand of distance so willed,
it would grant us those we love, and those noons would become late afternoons.
Would make abundant those we long for.
It would have granted us those we love, turning noon heat into cool evenings.

And the preoccupier of distress - I have found none to preoccupy me from it.
And a consuming sorrow that allowed no distraction.

I cast aside my wisdom and turned back to youthful folly,
in folly, though I had passed many stages beyond youth.
To youth foolishly, though I have traversed the stages of youth.
In foolishness, though I had long passed the stations of youth.

It did with us, if only they were few.
The things they did to us, if only they had not been so few.

A way to the short night in Babel?
A way back to the short, sweet nights of Babylon?

Headlong for the west.
Have set my face toward the West, venturing deep into the wild.

the defenders of the outlying lands, then fight at evening.
The environs, then spend the night fighting.
The defenders of the borders, and my evenings fighting.

Though Tawfil ibn Makil has barred the way to her.
While Theophilus, son of Michael, has turned away from her.

Beyond the setting place of the sun, in those dwellings.
In those lands that lie beyond the setting sun.

Whoever marches within the battalions of Ibn Yusuf
will deem the truth of nearness to loved ones falsehood.
Sees reality in the nearness of loved ones to be false.
Sees the 'truth' of staying near loved ones as a mere illusion.

And if calamity stalks, he becomes a snare to trap it.

Their due share to the accustomed quarter - returning.
They return to his familiar abode as if they were family.

What saved him from the wearer of the sword-belt was only

Met you angrily, so flung away the squadrons.
That he met your anger by casting off his own sword-belt.

You warded off a blow from Islam which, had it struck,
would have left it forever after a dwindling figure.
Would not remain henceforth a person, diminished.
Would have left its figure forever diminished.

Even if they rank it after your other exploits, it
If they delayed it from your endeavors, it will indeed
Though they placed him later in time than your endeavors,
surely surpasses the earliest battle-days of men.
Restore the days of the ancient men of valor.
He surpasses the days of the ancients.

You rescued a thousand and eighty of them,
You contended with a thousand of them in eighty,
You salvaged a thousand men amidst eighty of the enemy,
and emboldened them until you drove back the massed armies.
And emboldened them until you repelled the great armies.
And emboldened them until you turned back the armies.

May those people be your ransom who, when duty befalls them,
Your ransom - men, when truth avoids them,
May those people be your ransom who, when true crisis strikes,
flee looming glory, each relying on the others.
Evade the everlasting glory, reliant.
Shrink away from looming glory in mutual reliance.

Where one of them was silent, you spoke,
So whoever of them stayed behind, you spoke out,
For while they were silent, you were the voice;
and where one of them spoke, you acted.
And whoever of them spoke, you acted.
And while they were mere talkers, you were the doer.
