وَلِلحائِمِand for the wanderer الظَمآنِthe thirsty كَالماءِlike water يَنقَعُquenches
I pose you a riddle: is there, for love, anything like a home that gathers,
I ask you, does love gather people like a home,
and for the thirsting wanderer, anything like water that quenches?
And quench the thirst of the yearning like water?
وَهَلand did? شَيَّعَescorted الأَظعانَthe departing caravans بَغتاًsuddenly فِراقُهُمtheir parting

Did their sudden parting escort the departing caravans
Did its departure suddenly bid the lovers farewell,
like a streaming eye that bleeds with anguish when it weeps?
Like a weeping cloud shedding its rain while it weeps?
أَماdid not? راعَكَalarm you الحَيُّthe tribe الحِلالُthe encamped بِهَجرِهِمby their abandonment

Did not the encamped tribe alarm you with their abandonment,
Does the permissible sustain you after they deserted you
and at dawn will their dispersal not alarm you still more?
While through separation they became more wondrous to you?

Rather, a specter of the one I pine for appears whenever
I sigh from longing, appears and awakens hope.
I moan with passion, instilling hope through temptation.

I awake from a loss that startles and terrifies me.

And my ear hears an echo that does not exist.

An imagined falsehood suffices you in place of truth,
It is enough - the right of fanciful imagination -
bringing back the grieving soul, so that it returns.
With it to return the soul of the infatuated so it retreats.

of life without another part holding back?

The harvest of youth is scattered spoils,
though once it was a gathered treasure.
While formerly it was collected loot.

I regret when I lower my goal,
of little worth; yet I see myself rich when I am content.
Becoming content when I am frugal.

The young man prevails in generosity and daring.

Small is a bow's usefulness, though its stock is nabʿ-wood,
The singing of the bow flows from the spring of its sapling
if the arm of the man who shoots it is castor-wood.
And the arm of the archer is strengthened by the bow.

For it to continue on. Rather, it is the heart that is severed.

And a pretentious slave contends with fate against you.

And overwhelms its prey while famished.

وَأَصحوand I grow sober فَلاso not أَصبوI yield to desire وَلاand not أَتَوَلَّعُI become infatuated
I am well, no longer afflicted with a complaint from love,
I awaken but do not slumber or harbor hope.
and I am sober, no longer yielding to desire or infatuation.
My days that provoke me with their length pass,
فَتَذهَبُso pass away أَيّاميmy days الَّتيwhich تَستَفِزُّنيrouse me
بِطالاتُهاtheir idle pleasures إِنّيindeed I إِلىto اللَهِGod أَرجِعُreturn
So pass those days of mine that rouse me
I shall return to God.
with their idle pleasures; indeed, to God I return.
Are they garments of forbearance or does my youth wane
أَثائِبُis it returning? حِلمٍsound judgment أَمor أُفولُthe setting شَبيبَةٍof youth
خَلَتthat has passed وَأَتىand has come مِنin دونِهاits stead الشَيبُgray hair أَجمَعُaltogether
Is it returning good sense, or the setting of youth
And pass while gray hair comes in entirety?
that has passed, with gray hair coming wholly in its place?
No day is better than one in which I deter youth
وَماand not خَيرُthe better يَومَيَّof my two days الَّذيthe one which أَزَعُI restrain الصِباyouthful desire
لَهُfor its sake وَأُحَلّىand I am adorned بِالنُهىwith reason وَأُمَتَّعُand am granted enjoyment
Yet the better of my two days is not the one when I curb youthful passion
From it, and preoccupy myself with prohibition and pleasure.
for its sake, and am adorned with reason and granted enjoyment.
