دَعَوتُكَI invited you لِلصَبوحِto morning wine وَقُلتُand I said سَبتٌSaturday
يَحُثُّurges عَلىtoward الصَبوحِmorning wine وَمِهرَجانُand Mihrajan
I invited you to morning wine and said, “Saturday
I called you to the dawn and said it was morning,
urges morning drinking—and so does Mihrajan.”
Urging dawn and celebration.
وَغَيمٌand a cloud قَدalready تَعَلَّقَhung suspended مُستَقِلّاًrising aloft
عَلَيهِupon it بِديمَةٍfor steady rain سَحٍّpouring ضَمانُa pledge
And a cloud hangs suspended aloft,
A cloud hung independent,
pledged to shed steady, pouring rain;
Adorned with flowing beauty and guarantee.
وَنَدمانٌand a drinking companion يَسُرُّكَdelights you أَنto تَراهُyou see him
لَهُfor him مِنof قَلبِthe heart of كُلِّevery أَخٍbrother مَكانُa place
And a drinking companion whom it delights you to see,
Regret pleases you to behold,
who has a place in every brother’s heart.
It has a place in each brother's heart.
كَيَعقوبَlike Ya‘qub بنِson of أَحمَدَAhmad أَوor أَبيهِhis father
وَعَنand revealing يَعقوبَYa‘qub يَفتَرُّsmiles الزَمانُTime
Like Ya‘qub son of Ahmad, or his father—
Like Ya'qub bin Ahmad or his father,
and Time smiles, revealing Ya‘qub.
Time exaggerates about Ya'qub.
كَريمٌnoble مِنfrom أَرومَةِthe stock of شَيرَزادٍShirzad
تَليقُare fitting بِهِfor him الجَهارَةُsplendid bearing وَالبَيانُand eloquence
A noble man of Shirzad’s stock,
A generous one from the perfume of Sherzad,
whom splendid bearing and eloquence befit.
Boastfulness and eloquence suit him.
هِجانٌof pure lineage مِنهُمُamong them وَلَرُبَّand indeed many a مَجدٍglory
أَتاكَcame to you بِهِwith it أَغَرُّهُمُtheir most radiant one الهِجانُthe purebred one
Of pure lineage among them—and many a glory
Passionate praise from them, and for the Lord of glory,
their most radiant, purebred one has brought you.
Their most passionate one brought it to you.
أَرادَsought مَعاشِرٌgroups of men أَنto يَبلُغوهُمequal them
وَماand not يَدنوdraws near إِلىto الظَنِّconjecture العِيانُdirect sight
Groups of men have sought to equal them,
Some wanted to reach them,
yet direct sight does not draw near to conjecture.
But neither assumption nor experience comes close.
وَماand not تَخفىare hidden المَكارِمُnoble deeds حَيثُwherever كانَتthey may be
وَلاnor أَهلُpeople of المَكارِمِnoble deeds حَيثُwherever كانواthey may be
And noble deeds are not hidden, wherever they may be,
Noble deeds do not stay hidden where they are,
nor are those who perform them, wherever they may be.
Nor do people of noble deeds, wherever they are.
