رَأَيتُI saw الاِنبِساطَopenness; familiarity إِلَيكَtoward you يُحظىfinds favor
لَدَيكَwith you وَيُستَماحُand is solicited بِهِthrough it النَوالُbounty
I have seen that openness toward you finds favor
I saw you were pleased with openness from me
With you, and through it bounty is sought.
It was welcomed by you and requested often
وَيُغضِبُكَand angers you السُكوتُsilence إِذاwhen سَكَتناwe keep silent
وَبَعضُand some القَومِof the people يُغضِبُهُangers him السُؤالُasking; requesting
And silence angers you when we keep silent,
Yet silence from us angered you
While some men are angered by requests.
Though some people are bothered by questions
وَقَدand already سَبَقَتhave come before أَيادٍfavors; literally, hands مِنكَfrom you بيضٌwhite; noble
وَآلاءٌand blessings إِذاwhen حُمِلَتare borne ثِقالُheavy
And already favors, white and pure, have come from you,
Favors from you came, pure and white
And blessings that, when borne, are heavy.
Kindnesses - though heavy when carried
وَلَولاand were it not for حاجَةٌa need خَفَّفتُI took things lightly فيهاin it
لَقَلتُI would have said سَفاهَةًfoolishly ماwhat لاnot يُقالُis said
And were it not for a need in which I took things lightly,
Without this need, I'd have lightly spoken
I would have said, foolishly, what should not be said.
Foolish words that should not be said
جَرَيتُI proceeded عَلىaccording to الَّذيwhat عَوَّدتَنيهِyou accustomed me to
وَكانَand was مَكانَin place of ذاكَthat الجاهِprestige مالُmoney
I followed what you had accustomed me to,
I continued what you made habitual for me
And money took the place of that prestige.
Though money once filled that exalted place
