رَأَيتُI found الفَضلَbounty مِنin the form of فَرضٍan allotted grant وَقَرضٍand a loan
تَعَذَّرَproved unattainable عِندَamong آباءِfathers الفُضولِexcesses
I found bounty, in grants and loans,
I saw virtue in obligation and loan
unattainable among the fathers of excess.
Made difficult by spendthrift fathers
وَماand not أَسَدٌAsad وَلِيُّa bestower of يَدٍa favor فَتُرجىso might be hoped for
نَوافِلُهُhis extra gifts وَلاnor مَولىa patron of جَميلِkindness
And Asad is no benefactor, that one should hope for
No lion guardian of a weak hand hoped for
his largesse, nor a patron of kindness.
His voluntary extras nor a graceful patron
وَضيعُlowly القَدرِstanding مِنfrom عَدَمِlack of المَساعيnoble deeds
وَمَيتُand dead الذِكرِremembrance مِنfrom سَرَفِan excess of الخُمولِobscurity
Lowly in standing for lack of noble deeds,
Lost is the value from lack of effort
and dead in remembrance through excessive obscurity.
And dead is repute from excess of indolence
وَمَلعونُand accursed السِتارَةِthe curtain لَمnot يُخَلِّصseparate
And his curtain is accursed; he did not separate
Accursed is the curtain, it did not purify
the lighter missteps from the weightier ones.
The venial sins from the mortal
ذَمَمناwe condemned عَهدَهُhis dealings لَمّاwhen بَلَوناwe tested
We condemned his dealings once we had tried
We broke our vow when we tested
a man of base nature, ill-tempered and miserly.
A despicable nature, mean and stingy
وَلَمand not يُسَلِwas asked for الكَثيرَmuch وَغَيرُand not سَهلٍeasy
تَطَلُّبُكَyour seeking القَليلَa little مِنَfrom القَليلِa paltry man
And he was not asked for much, and it is not easy
And much did not ask for, and uncomplicated did not
for you to seek a little from one so paltry.
Seek from you the little from the little
أَبوAbu العَبّاسِal-Abbas أَخلَقُmore deserving لِلمَساعيof noble endeavors
بِحَقِّby right of الطولِbounty وَالباعِand the reach الطَويلِlong
Abu al-Abbas is more deserving of noble endeavors,
Abu al-Abbas, moral for effort
by right of his bounty and his long reach.
By the right of persistence and long trading
تَفَرَّدَhe stood alone بِالمَكارِمِin noble virtues دونَapart from قَومٍa people
يَرونَthey believe الجودَgenerosity مِنfrom ضَعفِweakness of العُقولِminds
He stood alone in noble virtues, apart from people
He alone monopolized the generous deeds
who believe generosity stems from weakness of mind.
They see generosity from weakness of minds
وَمَنand who كَأَبيlike Abu عُمارَةَUmara فيin نَداهُhis generosity
وَبارِعُand the excellence of فَضلِهِhis merit أَزكىthe finest دَليلِproof
And who is like Abu Umara in his generosity?
And one like Abu Umarah in his bounty
And his outstanding merit is the finest proof.
And brilliant is his superior merit a clearer proof
وَتَستَوليand hold sway الشُكوكُdoubts عَلَيكَover you ماas long as لَمnot
تُخَبِّركَtell you الفُروعُthe branches عَنِabout الأُصولِthe roots
And doubts hold sway over you until
And doubts besiege you unless
the branches tell you about the roots.
The branches inform you about the roots
