He has grown weary, so no compassion softens him.
He became indifferent, so no mercy touches him,
And he has taken excuses as allies.
And he took the causes of separation as helpers.
إِنif ساءَكَgrieved you الدَهرُtime بِهِجرانِهِthrough his estrangement

If time grieves you through his estrangement,
If the passage of time saddened you with its estrangement,
Then it may gladden you at times.
Sometimes it may gladden you as well.

Never despair of affection from one who grows weary,
Do not despair of the affection of a relative who became indifferent,
Who showed estrangement after union.
For after intimacy he manifested estrangement.
يَمَلُّgrow weary of هَذاthese الناسُpeople مَنthose whom قَدalready هَوَواthey loved

These people tire of those they have loved,
These people get bored with those whom they loved,
And our union endures as it was.
While our connection remains as it was.
