أَبلِغTell أَباAbu حَسَنٍHasan وَكُنتُand I used to أَعُدُّهُreckon him
أَبلِغ أَبا حَسَنٍ وَكُنتُ أَعُدُّهُ
مِنfrom بَينِهِمamong them قَمَناًworthy مِنَof الإِحسانِkindness
مِن بَينِهِم قَمَناً مِنَ الإِحسانِ
Tell Abu Hasan—I had reckoned him
among them worthy of kindness—
إِنif كُنتَyou are إِنسانَاًa human being فَقُلthen say ليto me صادِقاًtruthfully
إِن كُنتَ إِنسانَاً فَقُل لي صادِقاً
ماwhat الفَرقُthe difference بَينَbetween القِردِthe ape وَالإِنسانِand the human being
ما الفَرقُ بَينَ القِردِ وَالإِنسانِ
If you are human, tell me truthfully:
What is the difference between an ape and a human?
لَيسَis not المَذارُal-Madhar بِجالِبٍbringing لَكَto you سُؤدُداًeminence
لَيسَ المَذارُ بِجالِبٍ لَكَ سُؤدُداً
غَيرَexcept الجِرارِthe jars الخُضرِgreen وَالكيزانِand the cups
غَيرَ الجِرارِ الخُضرِ وَالكيزانِ
Al-Madhar brings you no eminence
save green jars and cups.
وَلَئِنand if indeed وَليتَyou gained office فَبِالمُصانَعَةِthen through bribery الَّتيwhich
وَلَئِن وَليتَ فَبِالمُصانَعَةِ الَّتي
قَدَّمتَهاyou offered it وَشَفيعِكَand your intercessor العُريانِthe naked one
قَدَّمتَها وَشَفيعِكَ العُريانِ
And if you gained office, it was through the bribery that
you offered, and your naked intercessor.
فَاللَهُso God مِنfrom كَثَبٍclose at hand حَسيبُكَyour judge ظالِماًas a wrongdoer
فَاللَهُ مِن كَثَبٍ حَسيبُكَ ظالِماً
وَحَسيبُand judge of زَوجَةِthe wife of صاحِبِthe head of الديوانِthe bureau
وَحَسيبُ زَوجَةِ صاحِبِ الديوانِ
So God, close at hand, will call you to account for your injustice,
and the wife of the bureau's chief as well.
