أَمّاas for الشَبابُyouth فَقَدso already سُبِقتَyou were outstripped بِغَضِّهِin its fresh bloom
وَحَطَطتَand you set down رَحلَكَyour saddle مُسرِعاًhastily عَنfrom نِقضِهِits worn-out mount
As for youth, its fresh bloom has already passed you by;
and hastily you took your saddle from its worn-out mount.
وَأَفاقَand regained his senses مُشتاقٌa yearning lover وَأَقصَرَand desisted عاذِلٌa reproacher
أَرضاهُpleased him فيكَin you الشَيبُgray hair إِذsince لَمnot تُرضِهِyou pleased him
A yearning lover has regained his senses, and a reproacher has desisted;
your gray hair has pleased him, since you failed to please him.
شَعَرٌhair صَحِبتُI accompanied الدَهرَtime حَتّىuntil جازَpassed بيwith me
مُسوَدُّهُits blackness الأَقصىdeepest إِلىinto مُبيَضِّهِits whiteness
My hair—I kept time's company until I was carried
by its deepest blackness into its whiteness.
فَعَلىso upon الصِباyouth الآنَnow السَلامُfarewell وَلَوعَةٌand a burning grief
تَثنيturns back عَلَيهِtoward it الدَمعَthe tears فيin مُرفَضِّهِtheir streaming
So now, farewell to youth—and a burning grief
that turns streaming tears back toward it.
وَليَفنَand let perish تُفّاحُthe apples of الخُدودِcheeks فَلَستُfor I am not مِنof
تَقبيلِهِkissing them غَزِلاًenamored وَلاnor مِنof عَضُّهِbiting them
Let the apples of cheeks perish, for I am not
enamored of kissing them, nor of biting them.
وَمُكايِدٍand a plotter ليagainst me بِالمَغيبِin my absence رَمَيتُهُI struck him
بِصَريمَةٍwith a firm resolve كَالنَجمِlike a star فيin مُنقَضِّهِits plunging descent
And one who plotted against me in my absence—I struck him
with a resolve like a star in its plunging descent.
فَرَدَدتُso I drove back ظُلمَةَthe darkness of يَومِهِhis day فيinto أَمسِهِhis yesterday
وَأَرَيتُهُand I showed him إِبرامَهُhis firm designs فيin نَقضِهِtheir unraveling
I drove the darkness of his day back into his yesterday,
and showed him his firm designs unraveling.
أَمضَيتُI carried out ماwhat أَمضَيتُI carried out فيهِagainst him وَلَوand if ثَنىhe followed up
بِإِشارَةٍwith a gesture أَمضَيتُI would have carried out ماwhat لَمnot أُمضِهِI had carried it out
I carried out what I carried out against him; had he followed it up
with a gesture, I would have carried out what I had not.
وَعِتابِand a reproach of خِلٍّa close friend قَدindeed سَمِعتُI heard فَلَمyet not أَكُنI was
جَلدَsteadfast الضَميرِof heart عَلىin استِماعِhearing مُمِضِّهِits piercing sting
And a friend's reproach I have heard, yet I was not
stouthearted enough to hear its piercing sting.
هَذاthis is أَبوAbu الفَضلِal-Fadl الَّذيwho صَرُحَbecame clear النَدىgenerosity
فيin راحَتَيهِhis two palms مَشوبُهُits mingled portion عَنfrom مَحضِهِits pure essence
This is Abu al-Fadl, whose generosity stands revealed:
in his palms, its alloy distinct from its pure essence.
لَمnot نُختَدَعwe were deceived بِجَهامِهِwith his rainless cloud عَنout of غَيمِهِhis raincloud
يَوماًever وَلَمand not نَرَwe saw خُلَّباًdeceptive lightning مِنfrom وَمضِهِhis lightning flashes
We were not cheated of his rainclouds with rainless ones,
not once, nor did we see false promise in his lightning.
طافَcircled الوُشاةُthe slanderers بِهِaround him فَأَحدَثَthen he brought about ظُلمَةًdarkness
فيin جَوِّهِhis sky وَوُعورَةًand roughness فيin أَرضِهِhis land
Slanderers circled him; then he spread darkness
in his sky, and roughness upon his land.
غَضبانَangry حُمِّلَhe was burdened إِحنَةًa grudge لَوif حُمِّلَتit were laid

Angry, burdened with a grudge that, were it laid
on morning's back, would weigh down its rising.
مَهلاًgently فَذاكَfor that is أَخوكَyour brother ذوwhom أَلهَيتَهُyou distracted him
عَنfrom لَهوِهِhis diversion وَشَغَلتَهُand you occupied him عَنfrom غُمضِهِhis sleep
Gently! That is your brother, whom you have distracted
from his diversions, and kept from his sleep.
خَزيانَashamed أَكبَرَhe deemed it grave أَنthat تَظُنَّyou suspect خِيانَةًtreachery
فيin بَسطِهِhis giving لِصَديقِهِto his friend أَوor قَبضِهِhis withholding
Ashamed, he deemed it grave that you should suspect treachery
in what he gives his friend or what he withholds.
ماذاwhat تَوَهَّمُdo you imagine أَنthat يَقولَhe might say وَقَولُهُwhile his words
فيagainst نَفسِهِhimself وَلِسانُهُand his tongue فيagainst عِرضِهِhis honor
What do you imagine he can say, when his words
are against himself, and his tongue against his own honor?
أَنبَوتُhave I recoiled عَنكَfrom you بِزَعمِهِمas they claim وَمَتىand when نَباhas recoiled
فيin حالَةٍany circumstance بَعضُone part of اِمرِئٍa man عَنfrom بَعضِهِanother part of him
Have I shunned you, as they claim? And when has
one part of a man, in any circumstance, shunned another?
أَنصَلتُhave I slipped free مِنfrom عَودِthe renewal of الحَياءِmodesty وَبَدئِهِand its beginning
وَخَرَجتُand have I stepped outside مِنfrom طولِthe length of الوَفاءِloyalty وَعَرضِهِand its breadth
Have I cast off modesty, in its renewal and its beginning,
and stepped outside loyalty's length and breadth?

بِنَوافِلِby the voluntary graces of الأَدَبِcourtesy الأَصيلِdeep-rooted وَفَرضِهِand its binding duty
The Madhhijite bond between us is sustained
by the voluntary graces of deep-rooted courtesy and its binding duties.
وَتَرَدُّدٌand repeated passing لِلكَأسِof the cup أَحدَثَhas created حُرمَةًan inviolable bond
أُخرىanother وَحَقّاًand an obligation ثالِثاًthird لَمnot نَقضِهِwe have discharged it
And the passing of the cup has forged an inviolable bond—
another one—and a third obligation we have not discharged.
