تَعَجَّبَmarveled أَهلُthe people of مَكَّةَMecca إِذwhen رَأَوناthey saw us
وَحُقَّand it was fitting لَهُمfor them رَأَواthey saw أَمراًa thing عُجاباwondrous
The people of Mecca marveled when they saw us.
And rightly so: they saw a wondrous thing.
رَأَوthey saw فيلاًan elephant يُعادِلَهُequals it ذُبابٌa fly
وَكَيفَand how يُعادِلُequals الفيلُthe elephant الذُباباthe fly
They saw an elephant matched by a fly;
And how can the elephant equal the fly?
