أَخلَيتُ ظَهري لَهُ مِن مُثقَلِ المِنَنِ
Alas, what shame my petitioning has brought me, Abu al-Hasan!
Oh, the shame of my petitioning, O Abu al-Hasan!
Through that petitioning, you relieved my back of the crushing burden of favors.
For him I cleared my back of the heavy burden of favors.

The emir’s gate is deserted, with not a soul for company there,
The prince's door is deserted, with no companion there,
except one man, resting a palm upon his chin.
Except a man resting a hand upon his chin.

I shall spare you even him forever; never shall I meet a trustworthy man
I have shielded you from Time; I find no trustworthy man
at the gate of your house, appealing for redress against Time.
At your house's door to be called upon against Time.
