أَخَذتُI grasped بِحَبلٍa cord مِنfrom دُلَيلٍDulayl فَلَمand ... not يَكُنhe was
أَخَذتُ بِحَبلٍ مِن دُلَيلٍ فَلَم يَكُن
ضَعيفَweak قُوىthe strands of النُعمىbounty وَلاnor واهِنَfrail الحَبلِthe bond
ضَعيفَ قُوى النُعمى وَلا واهِنَ الحَبلِ
I grasped a cord from Dulayl, and he was not
Weak in the strands of bounty, nor frail of bond.
فَتىًa young man لاnot أَرىI see فيin صِحَّةِthe integrity of العَهدِthe pledge مِثلَهُhis equal
فَتىً لا أَرى في صِحَّةِ العَهدِ مِثلَهُ
كَماjust as لايُرىis not seen فيin شُكرِgratitude for عارِفَةٍa kindness مِثليmy equal
كَما لايُرى في شُكرِ عارِفَةٍ مِثلي
A young man whose equal I see not in keeping faith,
Just as none like me is found in gratitude for kindness.
تَنَكَّبَhe shunned مَذمومَthe blameworthy الخِلالِtraits وَبَرَّزَتand excelled
تَنَكَّبَ مَذمومَ الخِلالِ وَبَرَّزَت
خَلائِقُqualities مِنهُof his فيin الوَفاءِloyalty وَفيand in الفَضلِgenerosity
خَلائِقُ مِنهُ في الوَفاءِ وَفي الفَضلِ
He shunned blameworthy traits, and preeminent were
His qualities of loyalty and generosity.
مَتىwhenever آتِهِI come to him أَحمَدI praise بَشاشَةَthe radiance of بِشرِهِhis cheerful countenance
مَتى آتِهِ أَحمَد بَشاشَةَ بِشرِهِ
وَأَرضىand I am pleased with الَّذيwhat يَأتيhe offers مِنَof القَولِspeech وَالفِعلِand action
وَأَرضى الَّذي يَأتي مِنَ القَولِ وَالفِعلِ
Whenever I come to him, I praise his radiant, cheerful countenance,
And am pleased with what he offers in word and deed.
وَلَستُand I am not بَعيداًfar مِنfrom تَناوُلِattaining مَطلَبٍa goal
وَلَستُ بَعيداً مِن تَناوُلِ مَطلَبٍ
عَسيرٍdifficult إِذاwhen سَهَّلتُهُI make it easy بِأَبيthrough Abu سَهلِSahl
عَسيرٍ إِذا سَهَّلتُهُ بِأَبي سَهلِ
Nor am I far from attaining a goal,
However difficult, when I make it easy through Abu Sahl.
