تَخَلَّيتُI withdrew عَنfrom سَيرِthe march of المَواكِبِthe processions صاغِراًhumbled
وَماand not كُنتُI was فيماin what قَدalready مَضىpassed أَتَخَلَّفُI lag behind
I gave up accompanying the processions, humbled,
though in days gone by I never lagged behind.
وَأَعلِفُand I provide fodder مِنfrom ماليmy wealth فَأَعلِفُso I provide fodder قاصِداًsparingly
وَأَنتَand you اِمرُؤٌa man مِنfrom غَيرِother than مالِكِyour wealth تَعلِفُyou provide fodder
I provide fodder from my own purse, so I provide it sparingly;
while you are a man who provides fodder from wealth not his own.
وَأَنتَand you أَميرُthe lord of الرَعيِpasturage فيin كُلِّevery بَلدَةٍtown
فَمِنso from ثَمَّthere مُهراناour two colts سَمينٌfat وَأَعجَفُand gaunt
And you are the lord of pasturage in every town;
hence our two colts: one fat, the other gaunt.
