نَفسيmy soul فِداؤُكَyour ransom أَيُّهاO الغَضبانُangry one
ماهاكَذاnot like this يَتَعاشَرَtreat one another الإِخوانُfriends
May my soul be your ransom, O angry one.
This is not how friends treat one another.
صَدَرَdeparted الأَصادِقُthe friends عَنfrom ذُراكَyour shelter وَحَظُّهُمand their share
مِنكَfrom you الوِصالُcloseness وَحَظِّيَand my share الهِجرانُestrangement
Friends have left your shelter, their share
from you being closeness, while my share is estrangement.
وَمُنِعتُand I was denied إِنصافاًfairness وَسِعتَyou encompassed بِهِwith it الوَرىall mankind
دونيexcluding me فَجَدُّso, good fortune ذاكَthat أَمor حِرمانُdeprivation
And I was denied the fairness you granted all mankind
except me—is that good fortune, or deprivation?
يُنسىis forgotten كِتابُكَyour letter مِنbecause of تَقادُمِthe remoteness of عَهدِهِits date
وَتَمُرُّand pass دونَwithout رَسولِكَyour messenger الأَزمانُthe ages
Your letter is forgotten, its date so long past,
and ages pass without your messenger.
وَإِذاand when كَتَبتُI write مُعَذِّراًapologizing لَمnot يُعطِنيgive me
صَدرُthe opening of الكِتابِthe letter رِضاًfavor وَلاnor العُنوانُthe address
And when I write in apology, neither
the letter's opening nor its address wins me favor.
فَعَلامَso why يُنسىis forgotten أَويُضاعُor is squandered عَلىamid النَوىseparation
وُدّيmy affection الرَخيصُcheaply valued وَشِعرِيَand my poetry المَجّانُgiven freely
So why, in separation, are forgotten or squandered
my love, held cheap, and my freely given verse?
أَوَلَيسَand is it not قَدindeed غَنَّتsang بِماwith what حَبَّرتُهُI finely composed it
فيكَin your praise الرُواةُthe reciters وَسارَتِand traveled الرُكبانُthe riders
Have not the words I finely wrought been sung,
in your praise, by reciters, and carried afar by riders?
مِدَحٌpraise-poems يَموتُdies عَلَيكَowed by you أَكثَرُmost of دينِهاtheir debt
وَيُذالُand is abased عِندَكَin your presence حَرُّهاtheir noblest وَيُهانُand is humiliated
Praise-poems, most of whose debt dies unpaid at your hands,
and whose noblest is abased and humiliated before you.
دَعleave ذاthis وَأَخبِرنيand tell me بِشَأنِabout the affair of صَديقِناour friend
بِشرٍBishr وَهَلand can يُرضىbe accepted لِبِشرٍfor Bishr شانُdisgrace
Leave that aside, and tell me about our friend,
Bishr—and can disgrace be accepted for Bishr?
زَعَقَتshouted مَغارِبَةُthe Maghribis of الخَميسِthe army وَراءَهُbehind him
فَكَأَنَّماso, as though نَعَقَتcawed بِهِat him الغُربانُthe crows
The army's Maghribis shouted behind him,
as though crows were cawing at him.
فَوَدِدتُso I wished أَنّيthat I لَوif only بَصُرتُI saw عَشِيَّةًone evening
بِالعِلجِat the foreign brute وَهوَwhile he was مُتَلتَلٌbeing dragged about عَجلانُhurrying
So I wished I could have seen, one evening,
the foreign brute, dragged about and hurried along,
فَأَرىand so I would see السَمينَthe fat man الفَدمَthe dullard حينَwhen تُمِضُّهُtorment him
قِطَعُfragments القَناof spears وَتَرُضُّهُand batter him القُضبانُthe rods
and seen the fat dullard as he was tormented
by spear fragments and battered by rods.
أَهوِنhow slight بِمَصرَعِهِhis death عَلَيَّto me وَبَينَهُمand among them
عَبدٌa slave تَناصىseized one another's forelocks حَولَهُaround him العِبدانُthe slaves
How little his death matters to me! And among them is
a slave, with slaves clutching one another's forelocks around him.
يَدعوhe calls بِضَبَّةَupon Dabba مِنfrom دَساكِرِthe villages of واسِطٍWasit
وَصَريخُand the rescuer of ضَبَّةَDabba دونَهُbefore him الصَمّانُal-Samman
He calls on Dabba from the villages of Wasit,
while al-Samman lies between him and Dabba's answering aid.
فَاللَهُso God أَكبَرُis greatest قَدindeed أُقيدَwas slain in retribution بِجُرمِهِfor his crime
بِشرٌBishr وَثارَand took vengeance بِنائِلٍfor Na'il جُعلانُJu'lan
So God is greatest! Retribution for his crime has claimed
Bishr, and Ju'lan has avenged Na'il.
