رَدَدتَ بِعيسى الرومَ مِن حَيثُ أَقبَلَت

رَدَدتَ بِعيسى الرومَ مِن حَيثُ أَقبَلَت

وَكانَ نَظيرَ الرومِ أَو هُوَ أَزيَدُ

وَكانَ نَظيرَ الرومِ أَو هُوَ أَزيَدُ

Through Isa you drove the Byzantines back the way they came.

And he was a match for the Byzantines, or greater still—

عَدُوٍّ أَجَلتَ الرَأيَ حَتّى جَعَلتَهُ

عَدُوٍّ أَجَلتَ الرَأيَ حَتّى جَعَلتَهُ

وَلِيّاً يَسُرُّ النَصرُ فيهِ وَيُحمَدُ

وَلِيّاً يَسُرُّ النَصرُ فيهِ وَيُحمَدُ

An enemy—you brought your judgment to bear until you made him

An ally whose victory brings joy and earns praise.

وَما زِلتَ بِالصَفّارِ حَتّى رَمى بِهِ

وَما زِلتَ بِالصَفّارِ حَتّى رَمى بِهِ

إِلى الشَرقِ لُطفٌ مِن تَأَتّيكَ أَوحَدُ

إِلى الشَرقِ لُطفٌ مِن تَأَتّيكَ أَوحَدُ

And you kept at al-Saffar until he was hurled

Eastward by a peerless subtlety in your approach.

عَساكِرُ شَتّى مِن أَعادٍ هَزَمتَها

عَساكِرُ شَتّى مِن أَعادٍ هَزَمتَها

وَما نازَعَت في هَزمِهِنَّ يَداً يَدُ

وَما نازَعَت في هَزمِهِنَّ يَداً يَدُ

Diverse armies of enemies you routed,

Yet no hand strove against another in their rout.

وَكُنتَ مَتى حاوَلتَ قَهرَ مُحارِبٍ

وَكُنتَ مَتى حاوَلتَ قَهرَ مُحارِبٍ

بَلَغتَ الَّذي حاوَلتَ وَالسَيفُ مُغمَدُ

بَلَغتَ الَّذي حاوَلتَ وَالسَيفُ مُغمَدُ

And whenever you sought to subdue a foe in arms,

You achieved your aim while the sword lay sheathed.

وَسَوَّغتَنا أَموالَ مِصرَ هَنِيَّةً

وَسَوَّغتَنا أَموالَ مِصرَ هَنِيَّةً

وَقَبلَكَ كانَت غُصَّةً تَتَرَدَّدُ

وَقَبلَكَ كانَت غُصَّةً تَتَرَدَّدُ

And you made Egypt's wealth go down sweetly for us,

Though before you it was a choking lump that kept returning.

مَشاهِدُ مِن تَدبيرِ رَأيٍ مُوَفَّقٍ

مَشاهِدُ مِن تَدبيرِ رَأيٍ مُوَفَّقٍ

إِذا فاتَ مِنها مَشهَدٌ عادَ مَشهَدُ

إِذا فاتَ مِنها مَشهَدٌ عادَ مَشهَدُ

Feats devised by a well-guided mind:

Whenever one such feat passes, another follows.

أُعينَ بِباديها الخَليفَةُ جَعفَرٌ

أُعينَ بِباديها الخَليفَةُ جَعفَرٌ

وَخَصَّ بِتاليها الخَليفَةُ أَحمَدُ

وَخَصَّ بِتاليها الخَليفَةُ أَحمَدُ

The caliph Ja'far was aided by the first of these,

And the caliph Ahmad was favored with those that followed.

فَلِم يَلتَوي أَمري عَلَيكَ وَشَأنُهُ

فَلِم يَلتَوي أَمري عَلَيكَ وَشَأنُهُ

صَغيرٌ وَمَأتى نُجحِهِ لَيسَ يَبعُدُ

صَغيرٌ وَمَأتى نُجحِهِ لَيسَ يَبعُدُ

Why, then, should my affair prove hard for you, when its scope

Is small, and the path to its success is not far?

وَلي غَيرُ حَقٍّ واجِبٍ إِن رَعَيتَهُ

وَلي غَيرُ حَقٍّ واجِبٍ إِن رَعَيتَهُ

فَمِثلُكَ يَرعى مِثلَهُ وَيُؤَيِّدُ

فَمِثلُكَ يَرعى مِثلَهُ وَيُؤَيِّدُ

And I have more than one binding claim; if you honor it,

One such as you safeguards and upholds such a claim.

أَمُتُّ إِلَيكَ بِالذَمامِ الَّذي خَلا

أَمُتُّ إِلَيكَ بِالذَمامِ الَّذي خَلا

وَمَنزِلَةٍ مِن جَعفَرٍ لَيسَ تُجحَدُ

وَمَنزِلَةٍ مِن جَعفَرٍ لَيسَ تُجحَدُ

I appeal to you by the old bond of obligation,

And by a standing with Ja'far that cannot be denied.

وَإِنّي هَجَرتُ الراحَ حَولاً مُجَرَّماً

وَإِنّي هَجَرتُ الراحَ حَولاً مُجَرَّماً

لَهُ وَشُهودي بِالَّذي قُلتُ شُهَّدُ

لَهُ وَشُهودي بِالَّذي قُلتُ شُهَّدُ

And indeed I forsook wine for an entire year

For his sake; my witnesses to what I said are present.

فَلا أُحرَمَن وَالفَضلُ عِندَكَ يُرتَجى

فَلا أُحرَمَن وَالفَضلُ عِندَكَ يُرتَجى

وَلا أُظلَمَن وَالعَدلُ عِندَكَ يوجَدُ

وَلا أُظلَمَن وَالعَدلُ عِندَكَ يوجَدُ

So let me not be deprived, when bounty is hoped for from you,

Nor let me be wronged, when justice is found with you.
