God is my guarantor and surety to her:

no reproacher shall be followed or obeyed concerning her.

I spend the night in upper al-Hazn; beside the sands

are her effaced dwellings and ruined traces.

    فَقَد صِرتُ أَهوى الريحَ وَهيَ قَبولُ

    Once I loved the wind whose return was westward;

now I love the wind when it blows from the east.

Dreams continued until there met for us

two phantoms: a seeker of bounty and a bestower.

I rouse her late at night, while in her mantle's loose folds

lies a slain one, his strength struck down by drowsiness.

Oh, how lovely she was when from a doze of sleep rose

a fallen one, smeared with saffron's clinging scent!

    فَما عُذرُها في المُلكِ حينَ يَزولُ

    I excused separation when its choice lay with a person;

but what excuse has it when ownership is lost?

Did not my soul restrain me from parting with one bound

to the soul, which weeps and wails for that departure?

Yes, I loathed separation, and fear seized

my ribs, some sorely stricken, some ailing.

I defended Thurayya with all my might, but there was

no way to keep her from being sold.

So there is no union unless you renew a bond of love,

and no companionship unless there is a replacement.

Had al-Baridi's mother borne a worthy son, he would not have kept

his bounty far from me; but a miser is a miser.

    وَيَنبو الحَديثُ الطَبعِ وَهوَ صَقيلُ

    He failed in my hand, though the base woman's son had wealth;

even a freshly forged blade may fail, though polished.

He began with the straight-haired blond ones; a man begins,

among people, with the clan he supports.

It would have befitted me for my strength to be sustained

by gracious consolation for what I failed to gain from him.

So will it profit me with Humula that he

bears the heaviest burdens that have wearied men?

He is sorrow in the souls of the envious, and regret,

and rage upon their livers, and burning thirst.

Whenever they sought to rival his endeavors,

their judgment retreated helpless and faltered.

They resented nothing but the lavishness of a favored man,

whose generosity yields readily to them and grows abundant.

He has a resolve upon which we cast our cares,

so the distant draws near, or the great becomes small.

It straightened for us the crookedness of troubles, and drove away

the calamities of this age while they lay encamped.

Thus even our farthest hopes were delivered

to us, and ruin carried off what we feared.

He bestows favors upon us, which never lack

praise that weighs heavily on the enemy's ear.

How could the earth fail to sprout, while above it

a cloud it looks to never ceases to promise rain?

He has, between Judharz and Bib, noble deeds,

peers and counterparts of beacons in the dark.

His striving is not held back from attaining them,

nor is his edge too blunt to win them.

    وَمَن يَفعَلِ المَعروفَ فَهوَ يَقولُ

    We sought his word from him after his deed;

and whoever does good is thereby speaking.

No hour of his influence, apart from his generosity,

is far from bringing ample gain.

I see myself as likely to attain wealth,

when counsel comes flocking to you.

And I, despite my sharpness and my bit's unruliness,

am surely enslaved and humbled by your bounty.

The faces of hope were burnished until made radiant

by a crescent bearing splendor and charm.

    وَكَم مِن كَثيرٍ قَد بَداهُ قَليلُ

    A little one, looked to for great things tomorrow morning;

and how much greatness has begun with something small!

We hope there will come to us by night and morning

torrents of his favors and overflowing bounty.

Whenever one more is newly added among you,

a sea gushes forth, or bounty follows bounty.
