عَجَباًHow wondrous! لِطَيفِat the phantom of خَيالِكِyour image المُتَعاهِدِever-returning
وَلِوَصلِكِand at your union المُتَقارِبِdrawing near المُتَباعِدِdrawing away
I marvel at the ever-returning phantom of your image,
And at your union, drawing near and drawing away.
يَدنوdraws near إِذاwhen بَعُدَis distant المَزارُthe meeting-place وَيَنتَويand departs
فيin القُربِnearness لَيسَis not أَخوa companion of الهَوىlove بِمُباعِدِone who keeps away
It draws near when the meeting-place is far, and departs
When close; no lover would keep his distance.

مِنfrom واغِلٍa wanderer بَينَamid الحَوادِثِcalamities شارِدِstraying
What did your visiting phantom seek in slumber
From a wanderer straying amid calamities?
مُتَحَيِّرٌbewildered يَغدوgoes forth بِعَزمٍwith resolve قائِمٍstanding firm
فيin كُلِّevery نائِبَةٍcalamity وَجَدٍّand fortune قاعِدِsitting idle
Bewildered, he goes forth with resolve standing firm
In every calamity, while fortune sits idle.
مَنwhoever كانَwas يَحمَدُpraises أَوor يَذُمُّblames زَمانَهُhis age
هَذاthis فَماthen not أَناI لِلزَمانِof the age بِحامِدِa praiser
Whoever may praise or blame his age—
This present age—I, for my part, have no praise for Time.
فَقرٌpoverty كَفَقرِlike the poverty of الأَنبِياءِthe prophets وَغُربَةٌand exile
وَصَبابَةٌand ardent longing لَيسَis not البَلاءُaffliction بِواحِدِjust one
Poverty like the prophets’ poverty, and exile,
And longing—there is more than one affliction.
كُفّيdesist (addressing a woman) فَقَدfor already أَلهاهُhas distracted him عَنfrom حَرِّthe heat of الهَوىlove
حَدَثٌa misfortune أَطَلَّloomed مِنَfrom الهَواءِthe air البارِدِcold
Desist, for he has been distracted from love’s heat
By a misfortune that loomed from the cold air.

How can one stay in Amid and its lands,
Now that the partings of Amid’s hair have turned gray?

مُتَحَمِّلٍstriving to endure تَحتَbeneath الضَريبِthe frost الجامِدِhard-frozen
She laughed, bringing tears to the eye of every pretender
Who strove to endure beneath the hard frost.

لِلمُغمَدِfor the sheathed one العَزَماتِresolves غَيرُnot مُساعِدِhelpful

O Yusuf ibn Abi Sa'id—wealth
Gives no aid to one whose resolves lie sheathed—
لَوif شِئتَyou wished لَمnot تُفسِدyou undo سَماحَةَthe generosity of حاتِمٍHatim

Had you wished, you would not have undone Hatim’s bounty
Through generosity, nor demolished Khalid’s glorious deeds.
