The talebearers gathered around him, so he shunned me and turned away.

And his estrangement went too far, tormenting and searing me.

And love is a malady in which you ever see

a wounded liver and a wasted heart.

And at Dhu al-Ghada dwells the solace of a love-enslaved man's heart,

his ribs bowed over embers of ghada wood.

He reaches evening thirsty, though the watering places abound,

close at hand—yet he is barred from their brinks, driven off.

How can folly's path be yours, now that there has faded

so much of the hue of youth's first bloom?

Ah, would that I knew: will it return as it first appeared,

the season of youthful dalliance, or come again as it went?

There were nights of youthful passion; then were severed

their bonds; and a season of pleasure, which passed away.

Abu Ali, of lofty rank, has made dear

the days of an age that once was hated.

A generous man whose suppliants expect his bounty

in torrents, when giving elsewhere is a mere trickle.

He sharpens his resolve: were its edge to be touched,

it would blunt both edges of the unsheathed sword.

Men sought to match his noble deeds, but fell short

of him; his rival can do no more than grow weary.

Will you listen to the apology of one repenting

of his fault, begging you to grant him your favor?

What you were told was nothing but rash haste

from an archer who remembered loyalty and merely twanged his bow.

    An aggrieved man's outbursts, a hard-pressed man's lapse:

he avoided plain speech about you and spoke in hints.

So why do I offer you closeness, striving

to my utmost, while you bestow estrangement on me, turning away?

I draw near in friendship, while you draw away, turning aside

from me; that is a state of affairs no one can approve.

So do cloak in pardon the lapse of an offender

for whom, under your displeasure, the wide earth has narrowed.
