A favor from God, deserving thanks, and a kindness,

And a blessing—ingratitude for it is injustice and transgression.

    أَضحى لَها وَهوَ طَلقُ الوَجهِ جَذلانُ

    A calamity befell the palace, not the palace's king;

He met it with a cheerful face, rejoicing.

He builds and inhabits what he builds, close at hand,

For the earth is his home, and mankind his slaves.

A fire was not worth our spending the night over it,

All of us anxious at heart and burning with distress.

Yet I do not blame a caring man if he is visited

By grief over that: a human being is only human.

And sometimes misfortune brings the well-being

One hopes for, and kindness follows harm.

Let the heir apparent's majesty not diminish,

Nor let him submit to the turns of time.

The caliph has recompense for what he has lost:

Wealth for wealth, and buildings for buildings.

The people took it as a good omen, and their expectations grew firm,

And an omen sheds light on part of what is to come.

And they were certain that the fire's radiance was the

world he would be given to rule—and fire is a sovereign.
