Here is the beloved—welcome to his apparition!
How did he find his way while night wore its robe?
بَلrather كَيفَhow زارَhe visited وَدونَهُand before him مَجهولَةٌan uncharted waste
مِنof سَبسَبٍa desert plain قَفرٍbarren تَمورُseething بِآلِهِwith its mirage
But how did he visit, with an uncharted waste before him,
Of barren desert plain, seething with its mirage?

A night traveler who crossed the dune-valleys of ʿĀlij,
The far reaches of its plains and mountains,
حَتّىuntil تَقَنَّصَهُsnared him الكَرىslumber لِمُتَيَّمٍfor one enslaved by love

Until slumber snared him for one enslaved by love,
Whom he would have cured of anguish, were it not for slumber.
رَشَأٌa young gazelle كَأَنَّas though الشَمسَthe sun يَومَon a day دُجُنَّةٍof gloom
حَيراءَbewildered بَينَbetween هُجولِهِhis valleys وَحِجالِهِand his curtained pavilions
A young gazelle—as though the sun, on a day of gloom,
Were bewildered among his valleys and curtained pavilions.
وَمُنَعَّمٍand a pampered one هَجَرُthe parting of السُرورِjoy بِهَجرِهِwith his parting
لِمُحِبِّهِfrom his lover وَوِصالُهُand its union بِوِصالِهِwith his union
And a pampered one: joy's parting comes with his parting
From his lover, and its union comes with his union.
واهاًAh! لِأَيّامٍfor days غَنيناwe lived مَرَّةًonce
بِنَعيمِهاin their bliss وَالدَهرُwhile fortune فيin إِقبالِهِits favorable course
Ah, for the days when once we lived
In their bliss, while fortune favored us.
أَبَنيO sons of حُمَيدٍḤumayd طالَrose high مَجدُthe glory of مُحَمَّدٍMuḥammad
لَمّاwhen تَطاوَلتُمyou stretched upward لِبُعدِbecause of the remoteness of مَنالِهِreaching it
O sons of Ḥumayd, Muḥammad's glory towered high
When you stretched toward it, so far beyond your grasp.
وَلَكُمand you have وَلَستُمthough you are not لاحِقينَcatching up بِشَأوِهِto his level
شَرَفٌnobility تَظَلُّabides الشَمسُthe sun تَحتَbeneath ظِلالِهِits shadows
And you possess—though you cannot match his reach—
Nobility beneath whose shade the sun itself abides.

Do not envy him the eminence of his rank, which
Has proved beyond you; act as he acts.
مَلِكٌa king أَطاعَتهُobeyed him العُلاglory وَأَطاعَهاand he obeyed it
فيin مالِهِhis wealth وَعَصىand he rebelled عَلىagainst عُذّالِهِhis reproachers
A king whom glory obeyed, and who obeyed it
In spending his wealth, and defied his reproachers.

لِلمَجدِfor glory إِلّاexcept that نالَهاhe attains it بِنَوالِهِthrough his bounty
Lavish in gifts: no standard is raised
For glory but he attains it through his bounty.
مُتَنَقِّلٌpassing مِنfrom سُؤدَدٍeminence فيinto سُؤدَدٍeminence
مِثلَlike الهِلالِthe crescent moon جَرىcoursed إِلىtoward اِستِكمالِهِits fullness
Passing from eminence to eminence,
Like the crescent moon, coursing toward its fullness.
ياO أَيُّهاyou المَلِكُthe king الَّذيwho قَسَمَdivided النَدىbounty
نِصفَينِinto two halves بَينَbetween يَمينِهِhis right hand وَشَمالِهِand his left hand
O king, who divided bounty
Into two halves between his right hand and his left,
فَأَجازَso he sanctioned حُكمَthe judgment of السَيفِthe sword فيon أَعدائِهِhis enemies
فَمَضىso it took effect وَحُكمُand the judgment of الجودِgenerosity فيon أَموالِهِhis wealth
Then sanctioned the sword's judgment on his enemies,
So it took effect, as did generosity's judgment on his wealth.
