Nasr has grown distant from one who hopes,

Perhaps Hamula has slain
my servant openly, or murdered him by stealth.

So may poetry, as a craft, be unblessed,
nor those about whom it is spoken, nor those who speak it.

And I used to think Asim a protector
from the calamity whose intractability I dread.

Nor did I find al-Marzubani praiseworthy,
though I used to praise his deeds.
