كَأَنَّas though تَشَكِّيَthe complaining السَفرِthe travelers الحَيارىthe bewildered
عَويلُwailing ضَرائِرٍco-wives باتَتspent the night غَيارىjealous
The bewildered travelers' complaints seem like
the wailing of co-wives who spent the night jealous.
نُعيرُwe lend القُفصَal-Qufs وَالبَردانَand al-Bardan شَوقاًlonging
نَضَنُّwe are sparing بِهِwith it عَلىtoward بِنَّيBinnay وَبارىand Bara
We lend al-Qufs and al-Bardan a longing
we begrudge Binnay and Bara.
نُرَجّيwe hope أَنthat يُتاحَmay be granted لَناto us مَسيرٌa journey
كَماjust as تَرجوhope for المُفاداةَrelease by ransom الأَسارىthe captives
We hope that a journey may be granted us,
as captives hope to be ransomed.

تَعَرَّضَintervenes obstructively فيهِin it دَجّالُthe Antichrist النَصارىof the Christians
Whenever the vizier grants us leave,
the Christians' Antichrist intervenes to block it.

إِذاwhen كَلَّفتُهُI demand of him وَخدَswift striding المَهارىthe Mahri camels
You see the man who shits during sex barring my way,
when I demand of him the swift pace of Mahri camels.
مُنيتُI have been afflicted بِأَوضَعِwith the lowliest الثَقَلَينِhumans and jinn قَدراًin rank
فَياso alas for هُلكىmy ruin هُناكَthere وَيادَمارىand alas for my destruction
I have been afflicted with the lowest in rank of humans and jinn:
so alas for my ruin there, and alas for my destruction!
بِأَضرَطَwith one who farts more حينَwhen يُصبِحُhe reaches morning مِنthan حِمارٍa donkey
وَأَسلَحَand more prone to defecate حينَwhen يُمسيhe reaches evening مِنthan حُبارىa bustard
With one who farts more in the morning than a donkey,
and shits more in the evening than a bustard.
وَكَمand how much لَطَخَhe has smeared الأَحِبَّةَthe loved ones مِنof ثَجيرٍdregs
تَبيتُspend the night صُحاتُهُمtheir sober ones عَنهُfrom it سُكارىdrunk
And how often he has smeared his friends with foul dregs,
so their sober ones spend the night drunk from it!
فَواحِشُabominations لَوif تَوافَتcame together عِندَin كَلبٍa dog
تَخَفّىwould hide الكَلبُthe dog خِزياًin shame أَوor تَوارىwould vanish from sight
Abominations—if they all came together in a dog,
the dog would hide in shame or vanish from sight.

Damisa crosses himself at their hideousness,
and Tamara is ashamed at their foulness.
