مِنِّيَfrom me وَصلٌcloseness وَمِنكَand from you هَجرٌestrangement
وَفِيَّand in me ذُلٌّabasement وَفيكَand in you كِبرُpride
From me, closeness; from you, estrangement.
And in me, abasement; in you, pride.
وَماand not سَواءٌequal إِذاwhen التَقَيناwe meet
سَهلٌgentle عَلىin خُلَّةٍfriendship وَوَعرُand rough
And when we meet, we are not alike:
One gentle in friendship, the other rough.
إِنّيindeed I وَإِنand though لَمdid not أَبُحI disclose بِوَجديmy passion
أُسِرُّI conceal فيكَconcerning you الَّذيwhat أُسِرُّI conceal
Indeed, though I have not revealed my passion,
I hide what I hide of my feelings for you.
ياO ظالِماًone who wrongs ليme بِغَيرِwithout جُرمٍoffense
إِلَيكَto you مِنfrom ظُلمِكَyour injustice المَفَرُّthe refuge
O you who wrong me though I am guiltless,
My refuge from your injustice is you.
قَدindeed كُنتُI was حُرّاًfree وَأَنتَand you عَبدٌa slave
فَصِرتُso I became عَبداًa slave وَأَنتَand you حُرُّfree
Once I was free, and you a slave;
Now I have become a slave, and you are free.
بَرَّحَsorely afflicted بيme حُبُّكَlove for you المُعَنّىanguished

وَغَرَّنيand beguiled me مِنكَin you ماwhat يَغُرُّbeguiles
My anguished love for you has worn me down;
And what beguiles in you has beguiled me.
أَنتَyou نَعيميmy bliss وَأَنتَand you بُؤسيmy misery
وَقَدand sometimes يَسوءُdistresses الَّذيwhat يَسُرُّdelights
You are my bliss, and you are my misery;
And what delights may also bring pain.

You recall many a night we reveled
In its shade, while time was fresh and green.

Its darkness vanished—and what night
Could darken over us, with you a full moon?

كِلاboth الرُضابَينِthe two sweet draughts مِنكَfrom you خَمرُwine
You mix your saliva with wine for me;
Both sweet draughts from you are wine.
لَعَلَّهُperhaps it may be أَنthat يَعودَreturns عَيشٌlife
كَماas بَداit appeared أَوor يُديلَreverses fortune دَهرُtime
Perhaps life will return
As it once was, or time will bring a change of fortune.

وَنَيلُand bounty فَتحٍFath's لَدَيَّwith me غَمرُoverflowing
Fath's generosity toward me is abundant;
And Fath's bounty to me overflows.

وَالأَبلَجُand the bright-faced one الأَزهَرُthe radiant one الأَغَرُّthe resplendent one
The benefactor, the lavish giver, in whom hope rests,
And the bright-faced, the radiant, the resplendent.
إِذاwhen تَعاطىpursue الرِجالُmen مَجداًglory
بَذَّهُمُoutstrips them سَبقُهُhis lead المُبِرُّsurpassing
When men contend for glory,
His surpassing lead leaves them behind.

وَهُمand they ظَلامٌdarkness وَأَنتَand you فَجرُdawn
They are shallow pools, and you a sea;
And they are darkness, and you are dawn.
إِنّيindeed I وَإِنand though كُنتُI am ذاpossessed of وَفاءٍloyalty
لاnot يَتَخَطّىmakes its way إِلَيَّto me غَدرُtreachery
I, though I am a man of loyalty—
No treachery can find its way to me—
لَذاكِرٌsurely recounting مِنكَfrom you فَضلَgrace نُعمىfavor
وَسَترُand concealing نُعمىthe favor الكَريمِof the noble man كُفرُingratitude
Will surely recount your gracious favors;
And concealing a noble man's favor is ingratitude.
وَكَيفَand how شُكرِكَthanking you عَنin سَواءٍdue measure
وَماand no يُدانيcomes near نَداكَyour bounty شُكرُthanks
And how can I thank you in due measure,
When no thanks comes near your bounty?

إِتيانُهُhis doing الأَمرَthe deed فيهِin which عُذرُan excuse
An excuse—yet it is fault enough for a noble man
To do a deed that calls for an excuse.
