    إِذ حَظُّهُ مِن مِثلِيَ الإِرغامُ

    Your reproach, though well-intentioned, is torment;

for its portion from one like me is contempt.

Love of youth! There is no love that does not

fade in its season, yet you cling fast.

You were turned gray while young, yet no smaller grew the passion

of my soul; then the stripling said, 'You are a boy.'

Far from it! Time has oppressed me, but not

my longing—can the heart's longing for you be oppressed?

    بَل فِض لِذاكَ فَما عَلَيكَ مَلامُ

    O tears, cease your long flowing over youth;

rather, overflow for it—no blame rests on you.

If my beloved's conduct is lawful to him

in his own eyes, then enduring his absence is forbidden.

    By God, longing continually does

to the body what illnesses cannot do.

The beloved departed; night grew long, and there was no

place for a short night after that departure.

Where is she for whose sidelong glances

the heart would yearn, though they were arrows?

And her speech was like rain, whose downpour was lavished

by a cloud when severe drought struck.

If I die of grief at the remoteness of her dwelling,

then death is relief, and life is doom.

Sorrow was allotted to me, and generosity to Ahmad:

two portions—the pens have dried upon them.

Glory to you, sons of Adnan! The tongues of humankind

serve you, for that honor, in singing your praise.

There has come what wishing could not reach,

from him; before him, poverty itself is overwhelmed.

Time's sins in all that has passed are forgiven,

now that the days have repented.

His forefathers governed the caliphate with wisdom,

when no other people governed it as they did.

Ask the land of Iraq about him: how many are his

deeds whose remembrance has upheld Islam!

From it has vanished a light of his, whose radiance

dispels night's blackness, dark though it is.

He rose above humankind through himself and his forefathers,

not as Isam rose to eminence among men.

Three things tower over Syria within its land:

his bounty, his largesse, and his beneficence.

And three things enfold you if you visit him:

his gifts, his kindness, and his honoring welcome.

And three things his character has shunned:

among them, foul speech, falsehood, and sins.

And three stand among the brightest of his deeds:

his planning, his undoing, and his making firm.

And glory is twofold: one share was won

by his maternal uncles, the other by his paternal uncles.

And God has singled him out for glory whose memory

the years forever renew for him.

His vigils, while night lets fall its curtain,

have left eyes bereft of sleep.

His favors have embraced all: some of them bring

gratitude, while others are a bridle for the envious.

    وَالبَدرُ ذو نَقصٍ وَذاكَ تَمامُ

    Ibrahim's son has become a full moon of glory;

the full moon wanes, but he is perfection.

Understand, Abu al-Abbas, without needing instruction,

words whose foundation is raised by flawless craft.

Scarcely had I made for you when there spoke to me—

'Visit me with your praise'—your smiling face.

And I heard a ready 'Yes' from your mouth,

and the branches of the root 'Yes' are favors.

So I composed wondrous verse about you, beyond

imagination's power to climb to its heights.
