The imam has indeed been granted victory over his foes,

And the realm now stands on firmly planted pillars.

And the nights have shown, in Shujaʿ

    And Tamish, how corruption ends.

Their waywardness persisted, and both grew obstinate,

And obstinacy and persistence can bring ruin.

And both went astray in defying their masters,

So neither found joy there in defiance.

Great was their haste to seize the public revenues,

And plain were their efforts to corrupt the realm,

By infringing the caliphate's rights and diminishing it,

And by wronging and oppressing the subjects.

Commander of the Faithful, be safe! For long ago

You banished error from us through right guidance.

Your justice rescued the world, so it grew tranquil,

And your bounty embraced the horizons of the lands.

May your son al-ʿAbbas's conduct bring you joy,

A clear, guiding example of sound judgment.

Through him you established, choosing with unstinting care,

The path of pilgrimage and jihad among us.

Hearts rallied to him and pledged him allegiance,

    With sincere goodwill and affection.

He is the king around whom are gathered,

    By destiny, the people's affections.

So those near and far rejoiced in him,

And friend and foe set their hopes on him.

He intercedes for the Muslims with you for

The kindnesses and favors you bestow.

You relinquished the two fifths for his sake when

He spoke about the crop-sharing tax in al-Sawad.

And indeed I look to you in hope, and look to him

Before you, for bounty to be gained through him.

Can my request be far from fulfillment, when I turn to you

With it, and rely upon your care?

    And success is never nearer

Than when a man of standing intercedes with a generous one.

Perhaps I may be honored on my departure

Through your bounty, or be exalted in my homeland.
