    يَومٌ يَطيبُ بِهِ مَدارُ الأَكؤُسِ

    Celebrate Mihrajan with your morning draught—its good fortune is unblighted;

A day on which the circling of cups is sweet.

And drink your wine at dawn—may you enjoy it—

By the ratl, unmixed, and call for sun-mellowed wine for me.

Do not vex me; pour me what I seek,

As would a cheerful man of noble nose.

These gardens have revealed their blossoms to your gaze,

And shown you something lovelier than robes of fine silk.

They spread embroidered cloth, gilded and richly patterned,

And mantles woven for something other than wearing.

And show you camphor and gleaming gold dust,

On a smooth, upright stalk like emerald,

Swaying its necks as it moves,

With the languor of ease and the pause of one drawing breath,

Adorned with every kind of enchanting beauty,

    Breathing out musk—what a breath!

Set before your eye as a companion—how noble it is,

As a companion and drinking partner in the gathering!

Then, if you yearn for eyes and their coy allure,

Let your glances roam among the eyes of narcissus.

Every rare and lovely bloom gives you

Beauty, and the most soul-delighting sight you see.

Mihrajan has a cheerful radiance; so revel in it,

And leave off preoccupation with haunting cares.

Time has not turned on you alone, sparing us,

Giving to us while clothing you in a pauper's robe.

Rather, we are all alike in it; so seek

Joy that lifts you from the station of the wretched.

Take it lightly; none can withstand its vicissitudes

Except a youth of noble roots within it.

Join in, even if you are a man of Hashim's line,

And leave your Hashimite ways this day of ours, and be Persian.

Does it suit you to hang back from young men

Who have quaffed tawny wine beneath the wing of deep darkness?

They came early for the morning draught's delight; so be a youth

Who has traded the lesser—his life—for the more precious.

And bid your guileless youth repeat, whenever

You fill your cup to the brim, a despairing lover's outpouring:

“Lower your eyelids, O eyes of narcissus,

So that I may win a kiss from Mu'nis.”
