We have an unjust companion who never

يُسَرُّhe is delighted فَيَأشَرُthen grows wanton أَوor يُزدَهىbecomes conceited
يُسَرُّ فَيَأشَرُ أَو يُزدَهى
إِذاwhen قامَit stands erect فيin يَدِهِhis hand وَاِنتَفَخand swells
إِذا قامَ في يَدِهِ وَاِنتَفَخ
He delights, then grows wanton or conceited,
when it stands erect in his hand and swells—
سُرورُthe delight of المَواليthe retainers بِقَمرٍat a gambling win عَلَيهِagainst him
سُرورُ المَوالي بِقَمرٍ عَلَيهِ
أُديلَvictory was granted أَخيراًat last بِشاهٍwith a king وَرُخand a rook
أُديلَ أَخيراً بِشاهٍ وَرُخ
like the retainers’ joy in a gambling win against him,
gained at last with a king and a rook.
حَديثُtalk of البَغاءِwhoring وَأَسبابِهِand its means
حَديثُ البَغاءِ وَأَسبابِهِ
وَيَخرُجُand he withdraws مِنfrom غَيرِهِanything else مُنسَلِخsloughing himself free
وَيَخرُجُ مِن غَيرِهِ مُنسَلِخ
His talk is of whoring and its ways,
and he sloughs off all other talk.
وَيُطريand he extols وَلاءَallegiance to بَنيthe sons of هاشِمٍHashim
وَيُطري وَلاءَ بَني هاشِمٍ
وَماyet not عَظمُهُhis bone فيهِمُamong them بِالمُمِخmarrow-filled
وَما عَظمُهُ فيهِمُ بِالمُمِخ
And he extols allegiance to the sons of Hashim,
yet his bone among them is marrowless.
فَكَيفَso how يُنَكِّبُdoes he turn aside عَنfrom مَذهَبٍa creed
فَكَيفَ يُنَكِّبُ عَن مَذهَبٍ
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle تَعاطىhe adopts سِواهُanything other than it شُدِخhis head is smashed
إِذا ما تَعاطى سِواهُ شُدِخ

Frozen solid from cold, never thawed,
and raw from dullness, never cooked.
